President Donald Trump has vowed to ramp up help to Venezuela following Thursdayâs quake.
âWe took over Venezuela in less than one day, and the oil is flowing, and weâre getting along with them great,â Trump said in remarks from the Rose Garden Thursday evening.
âWeâre going to, by the way, help them with their big â they had a tremendous earthquake last night. Did you read about massive, massive in Caracas? But weâre going to help them out,â Trump added.
A Marine Corps general flew into Caracas on Thursday to help lead the US militaryâs earthquake relief effort in Venezuela, where, just six months ago, US special forces launched a deadly raid to capture President NicolĂĄs Maduro.
Maj. Gen. Kevin J. Jarrard is the senior Southern Command official on the ground.
The military said he is to âplan, coordinate, and direct the flow of rescue teams, equipment, and aid into the hardest-hit areas.â

Venezuelan forces deployed to the area hit by Wednesdayâs double earthquake are still searching for people who may be trapped under the rubble.
In an interview granted to Venezuelan public television (VTV), the Sectoral Vice President of Public Works and Services, Juan JosĂ© RamĂrez, stated that operations are being carried out with different machinery, such as percussion equipment that allows for the controlled breaking of concrete, with the hope of finding and rescuing more people alive.
RamĂrez appealed to the public to let specialized civil protection teams do their job.
âMany times, volunteers trying to help can actually make things worse,â the official said.
RamĂrez emphasized that the priority is âto save lives,â while efforts are also underway to restore basic services such as water and communications.
The US Treasury Department said Thursday it will permit âall transactionsâ with Venezuela ârelated to earthquake relief efforts.â
The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) authorizes only partial and temporary relief from restrictions from June 26 through October 23.
The general license allows the processing and transfer of funds on behalf of third-country individuals âto or fromâ Venezuela, as long as they support operations covered by the specific authorization.
Venezuelans are frustrated by the slow pace of the governmentâs rescue response in the immediate aftermath of the twin quakes that struck on Wednesday.
âPeople are really frustrated. They are scared because they know that they donât have a state that will fulfill its role. So they know that nobody is going to go there and help them,â said Venezuelan economist Jorge Jraissati.

âThat is progress,â Obama said.
âListen, hypocrisy is progress. It is, because it means that you feel guilty enough to either lie to yourself or others.â
Fox News Digital reported that it reached out to Vanceâs office for comment.
Obama did not identify the specific speech he was criticizing, but Vanceâs most recent nationally televised remarks came during Independence Day celebrations marking Americaâs 250th birthday.
In that speech, Vance encouraged Americans to reject what he called a âtwo-dimensional viewâ of the country focused only on its historical failures.
âSo what Iâd ask you to do, my fellow Americans, on our 250th birthday, is to reject the two-dimensional view of your fellow citizens and reject the two-dimensional view of your country,â Vance said.
âReject the view of your nation that sees only its sins, but not its grace and its greatness.â
He also emphasized that Americaâs accomplishments were achieved by âa common people working towards a common future.â
Obama has generally avoided making Vance a regular target since the vice president took office.
One notable exception came during the 2024 presidential campaign when then-Vice President Kamala Harris selected Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate.
Without naming Vance directly, Obama contrasted Harrisâ choice with the Republican ticket.
âWhen a presidential candidate chooses a running mate, it says a lot about who they are and what kind of president theyâll be,â Obama said at the time, Fox News reported.
Political observers have increasingly discussed Vance as a potential frontrunner for the 2028 Republican presidential nomination, though he has not announced any plans to run.
