CHAPTER 3 – The Girl They Framed

CHAPTER 3 – The Girl They Framed

That night, Adrian replayed Marcus's recording twice.

"You were right," he said, closing the laptop. "He's reckless."

"Not reckless," Evelyn corrected. "Arrogant. Marcus only tells the truth when he believes he's the smartest person in the room."

A faint smile crossed Adrian's face.

It was the first time she'd seen him smile without bitterness.

"It's a useful weakness."

Together, they designed a trap.

Evelyn created a fake financial spreadsheet showing that "Alden Vale" was prepared to invest another twenty million dollars—but only after the company secured a new government construction contract.

She intentionally left the tablet unlocked on her desk.

Exactly as expected, Marcus's assistant secretly photographed every page.

Within hours, Marcus called an emergency board meeting.

"He took the bait," Adrian said, watching the security footage.

"But he'll need fake contracts to convince you," Evelyn replied.

"Which means..."

"He'll forge them."

Forty-eight hours later, it happened.

Marcus proudly emailed contracts bearing the digital signature of a city councilman.

The signature was fake.

The evidence was perfect.

"We have fraud," Adrian said.

"Not enough," Evelyn replied. "His lawyer will claim he believed the contracts were genuine."

She knew Marcus too well.

He always left himself an escape.

Later that evening, while searching through boxes of old insurance files in the mansion's archive room, Evelyn noticed a familiar name on a faded folder.

Cross Waterfront Project.

Curious, she opened it.

Inside was a witness statement dated ten years earlier.

Her heart stopped.

At the bottom of the page...

was her signature.

The document claimed that sixteen-year-old Evelyn Carter had witnessed Adrian's father falsifying safety reports.

Her hands began to shake.

"I never signed this..."

She rushed upstairs and threw the file onto Adrian's desk.

"What is this?"

The color drained from his face.

"I've been looking for that document for years."

"You think I did this?"

His silence hurt more than any accusation.

"I was sixteen!" she shouted. "I didn't even know what concrete testing was!"

Adrian slowly opened another folder locked inside his safe.

From it, he removed the original scanned image used during the lawsuit.

Then he placed another piece of paper beside it.

A school permission slip.

Signed by sixteen-year-old Evelyn.

The signatures matched perfectly.

Too perfectly.

Adrian looked at both pages for a long moment before speaking.

"It wasn't you."

Evelyn frowned.

"My mother copied your signature."

He pointed to tiny imperfections.

"The pressure... the angle... every mistake is identical."

"It wasn't forged by you."

"It was traced."

The room fell silent.

Everything suddenly made sense.

Her parents had stolen not only Adrian's family's company...

They had stolen their own daughter's identity.

"They kept me close..." Evelyn whispered.

"So I'd never discover the truth."

Adrian looked at her—not as the daughter of his enemies...

But as another victim.

Quietly, he stepped closer.

"I'm sorry."

Two simple words.

No one in Evelyn's family had ever apologized to her.

Tears filled her eyes before she could stop them.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Adrian gently placed his suit jacket over her shoulders.

"It's cold in here."

She almost laughed.

It wasn't cold.

He was simply trying to comfort her without saying so.

It was awkward.

Honest.

Human.

For the first time since their marriage began, Evelyn no longer felt alone.

But the moment didn't last.

A notification flashed across Adrian's phone.

His expression hardened instantly.

"What is it?" Evelyn asked.

He turned the screen toward her.

A grainy security photo showed Marcus sitting inside a parking garage.

Across the table from him sat a man known only as Victor Kane—a former military contractor now working as a private fixer.

The final image showed Marcus sliding a thick envelope across the table.

Cash.

"What does this mean?" Evelyn asked.

Adrian stared at the photo.

His voice became dangerously calm.

"It means your brother just hired someone..."

May you like

"...to make sure I don't live long enough to collect my revenge."
