CHAPTER 10

CHAPTER 10
THE MAN WHO STOLE TWENTY-TWO YEARS
Connor's uncle slowly stepped into the room.
No one spoke.
He looked at Robert.
Then at Connor.
Finally...
He lowered his head.
"I'm sorry."
Connor stared at him in disbelief.
"For what?"
The older man took a deep breath.
"I lied."
"I blamed Robert for everything."
"I couldn't accept your father's death."
"So I convinced myself..."
"...someone had to be responsible."
He looked toward Robert.
"You became the easiest target."
Robert remained silent.
Connor's fists tightened.
"You let me hate him."
"For twenty-two years."
His uncle nodded, tears filling his eyes.
"I know."
"And it's the greatest regret of my life."
Connor turned toward Robert.
"You knew?"
Robert smiled gently.
"I figured it out years ago."
"And you never said anything?"
Robert shook his head.
"Your uncle loved your father."
"He was grieving too."
"I couldn't take another family away from your mother."
Connor finally understood.
Robert hadn't been weak.
He had been protecting everyone.
Even the people who hurt him.
A few days later...
Both Robert and Margaret were discharged from the hospital.
As they stepped outside, sunlight filled the entrance.
Connor walked beside them.
This time...
He reached over and took Robert's travel bag before the older man could.
"I've got it, Dad."
Robert stopped walking.
For a second...
He simply looked at Connor.
Then his eyes filled with tears.
A smile slowly appeared on his face.
The kind of smile that only comes after years of waiting.
Margaret slipped her hand into Robert's.
Then took Connor's hand with the other.
For the first time...
The three of them walked out of the hospital together.
Not as strangers.
Not as a broken family.
But as one.
Some people believe family is created by blood.
Others believe it is built by sacrifice.
Connor finally understood the truth.
Blood may give you life.
But love...
May you like
Is what makes someone your father.
THE END.
