Chapter 1 — The Knock From the Coffin

Chapter 1 — The Knock From the Coffin

Rain pounded against the towering glass walls of the Whitmore Memorial Hall in Manhattan, turning the city skyline into a blur of silver and gray. Inside, everything was immaculate—white roses, polished marble, crystal chandeliers, and a sea of black designer suits gathered to mourn one woman.

Twenty-eight-year-old Victoria Whitmore.

The newspapers had called her America's golden heiress.

The doctors had called it sudden cardiac failure.

Her husband, billionaire investment executive Daniel Whitmore, had remained composed throughout the ceremony, accepting condolences with hollow eyes as guests whispered about the tragedy.

Soft piano music drifted through the hall.

The white coffin rested beneath thousands of orchids.

No one noticed the maid.

Until the doors exploded open.

Elena Morris stumbled inside, drenched from head to toe, her orange housekeeping uniform soaked with rain. In both hands she gripped a heavy fire axe.

For three years, Elena had worked inside Whitmore Manor.

Invisible.

Silent.

Ignored.

Now every eye in the room followed her as she charged toward the coffin.

CRACK!

The first swing shattered the polished lid.

Gasps echoed through the hall.

Another swing.

Wood exploded across the flowers.

Daniel lunged forward.

"What the hell are you doing?!"

Security rushed toward her.

But Elena screamed louder than anyone had ever heard.

"Don't touch me!"

Her voice wasn't filled with rage.

It was terror.

Pure terror.

She threw the axe aside and clawed desperately at the broken lid with bleeding fingers.

"Please... please..."

Daniel grabbed her shoulder.

"You're destroying my wife's funeral!"

She looked straight into his eyes.

"No."

Her voice trembled.

"I'm trying to save it."

Silence.

Then—

Tap.

Every head turned.

Another knock.

Tap...

This time unmistakable.

From inside the coffin.

The entire funeral hall froze.

Someone screamed.

Another guest fainted.

Daniel staggered backward, his face turning ghostly white.

Elena sobbed.

"I told you..."

The funeral workers ripped away the shattered lid.

Victoria lay motionless beneath white silk.

For one horrifying second...

Nothing happened.

Then—

Her fingers moved.

A tiny gasp escaped her lips.

Doctors rushed forward.

One checked her pulse.

His eyes widened.

"My God..."

"She's alive!"

Chaos erupted.

Guests cried.

Reporters outside flooded toward the entrance after hearing screams.

Paramedics rushed Victoria onto a stretcher.

As they wheeled her away, she barely managed to open her eyes.

She looked directly at Elena.

Barely moving her lips, she whispered one sentence.

"...Don't let him know..."

Then she lost consciousness again.

Everyone assumed she meant Daniel.

Everyone...

Except Elena.

Because she knew Victoria wasn't talking about her husband.

She was talking about someone far more dangerous.

May you like

Someone who was already standing inside the funeral hall...

Smiling.
