CHAPTER 6 — Blood Doesn't Make a Family

Rain poured across the abandoned parking structure.

Emily could barely keep up.

My newborn cried against my chest.

Behind us—

Footsteps.

Closer.

Closer.

Sarah slammed the security door shut behind us.

"They're gaining!"

A black SUV skidded across the concrete entrance.

Its headlights blinded us.

The passenger door opened.

Linda stepped out.

She should have been in custody.

Instead...

She smiled.

"You still don't understand," she called.

"You've already lost."

Police sirens suddenly filled the night.

From every direction.

Unmarked tactical vehicles surrounded the garage.

Armed officers poured in.

"Federal agents! Drop your weapons!"

Chaos erupted.

Linda's men scattered.

Within seconds, they were pinned to the ground.

Linda didn't resist.

She simply looked at Emily.

"I raised you."

Emily slowly stepped forward.

"You kidnapped me."

Linda said nothing.

Emily continued.

"You taught me to recognize lies."

A tear rolled down the little girl's face.

"That's why I knew you were lying."

Linda's smile finally disappeared.

Agents led her away in silence.

Weeks later, investigators uncovered one of the largest newborn trafficking conspiracies in the country's history.

Thirty-two children were identified.

Nine families were reunited.

Many more investigations remained open.

Emily finally met the woman believed to be her biological mother.

The reunion was filled with tears...

But when the meeting ended...

Emily walked back to me.

She took my hand.

"Can I still call you Mom sometimes?"

I knelt in front of her.

"You never have to ask."

She wrapped her arms around me while my son slept peacefully between us.

Blood had started the nightmare.

Love ended it.

And this time...

No one was hiding under the bed anymore.
