CHAPTER 3 — Twenty-One Years of Lies

The silence inside the kitchen felt suffocating.
No one spoke.
No one moved.
Every pair of eyes remained fixed on Cassandra Whitmore.
Only minutes earlier, she had stood in the center of the room with absolute confidence, humiliating a young chef she believed was powerless.
Now...
For the first time in decades...
She looked afraid.
Nathan slowly closed the leather folder.
His hands were steady.
His voice was not.
"Tell me I'm wrong."
Cassandra stared at him without answering.
"Tell me these records are fake."
Still nothing.
Nathan took another step toward her.
"Tell me that isn't my sister standing in front of us."
Cassandra finally lifted her chin.
"You've already made up your mind."
"I want the truth."
She laughed bitterly.
"The truth?"
"You really think this old woman remembers everything that happened twenty-one years ago?"
Helen's voice cut through the room.
"I do."
Cassandra shot her a murderous glare.
"You should have stayed silent."
"I stayed silent long enough."
Nathan turned to Helen.
"You said you saw someone carrying Isabel away."
Helen nodded.
"I couldn't see her face clearly."
"But I recognized the perfume."
She looked directly at Cassandra.
"You wore the same perfume every day."
Cassandra scoffed.
"Perfume isn't proof."
"No," Helen replied.
"But your driver was."
Everyone frowned.
"My younger brother worked as your personal driver."
Helen's voice shook.
"He kept your secrets for years."
Nathan frowned.
"What happened to him?"
"He died last winter."
Helen looked down sadly.
"Before he passed away..."
"He confessed everything."
The room became perfectly still.
"He told me Cassandra paid him fifty thousand dollars."
Nathan clenched his fists.
"For what?"
Helen's eyes filled with tears.
"To take a newborn baby out of this house before sunrise."
Sofia gasped softly.
Helen continued.
"He drove to Queens."
"He left the baby near Saint Matthew's Church."
"He couldn't bring himself to abandon her completely."
"So he waited until he saw a young woman discover the child."
Sofia covered her mouth.
Maria.
The woman she had called Mother her entire life.
Nathan looked at Cassandra.
"You paid someone to get rid of a baby."
Cassandra folded her arms.
"I did what was necessary."
Nathan stared at her in disbelief.
"Necessary?"
She took one slow step forward.
"You were too young to understand."
"Your father worshipped Eleanor."
"Everything belonged to her."
"The company."
"The estate."
"The trust."
"And then Isabel was born."
Her voice became colder.
"If both children survived..."
"The inheritance would be divided."
Nathan felt sick.
"So this was about money?"
"It was about survival."
"You stole an infant because of an inheritance?"
"I saved this family!"
Her voice echoed across the kitchen.
Everyone stared at her.
She had finally stopped pretending.
"Your father was weak."
"He couldn't make difficult decisions."
"Eleanor was sick."
"The Whitmore empire would have fallen apart."
Nathan's expression hardened.
"So you kidnapped my sister."
"I gave everyone a better future."
"You destroyed ours."
Cassandra's breathing grew heavier.
"You have no idea what sacrifices I made."
Nathan shook his head.
"You didn't sacrifice anything."
"You sacrificed someone else."
Sofia stood frozen.
Every sentence felt like another piece of her life breaking apart.
She whispered,
"My mother..."
"Maria..."
"She never knew?"
Helen gently wiped away a tear.
"No."
"She believed someone had abandoned you."
"She loved you with everything she had."
Sofia began crying again.
Not because Maria wasn't her biological mother.
But because she suddenly understood how much that woman had truly loved her.
Nathan walked over.
"You'll always honor the woman who raised you."
Sofia nodded through her tears.
"I just wish I could thank her one more time."
Nathan quietly placed a comforting hand on her shoulder.
"You already did."
Across the room, Cassandra suddenly turned toward the exit.
No one noticed at first.
She had begun backing away.
One careful step at a time.
Nathan looked up.
"Don't."
She froze.
"This conversation is over."
She spun toward the doors.
"I'm leaving."
Two young kitchen workers instinctively stepped into her path.
Neither of them had dared oppose her before.
Tonight was different.
Fear had changed sides.
"Move."
Neither man budged.
Cassandra shoved one of them.
"Get out of my way!"
Nathan slowly reached into the pocket of his suit jacket.
Everyone watched.
He pulled out his phone.
The screen was still glowing.
Cassandra's eyes widened.
Nathan looked at her calmly.
"You confessed."
She frowned.
"What?"
"You admitted everything."
Her face turned white.
Nathan slightly raised the phone.
"It recorded every word."
For a heartbeat...
No one breathed.
Then Cassandra lunged toward him.
"Give me that phone!"
Nathan stepped back.
She grabbed for his arm.
Missed.
Tried again.
The phone never left his hand.
Security guards rushed into the kitchen, alerted by the shouting.
They immediately separated Cassandra from Nathan.
She struggled wildly.
"You can't do this!"
"I'm your family!"
Nathan looked at her with icy disappointment.
"No."
He pressed one button on the screen.
The recording began playing.
Cassandra's own voice filled the kitchen.
"I paid him to take the baby."
"I did what was necessary."
"I saved this family."
Every word echoed back at her.
Every lie.
Every crime.
Every secret.
Her knees nearly gave way.
Nathan looked toward the head of security.
"Call the police."
Cassandra's breathing became frantic.
"You wouldn't dare."
Nathan didn't hesitate.
"I already have."
Somewhere in the distance...
The faint sound of approaching police sirens drifted through the night.
For twenty-one years, Cassandra Whitmore had ruled the mansion through fear.
May you like
Tonight...
Fear had finally come for her.
