Chapter 2: The Backlash and the Trap
The weeks following the fallout at the Sterling Grand Ballroom were a masterclass in media warfare. The legal team representing Victoria Sterling—a high-priced army of criminal defense attorneys known colloquially as "The Untouchables"—went on the offensive.
Since they couldn't disprove the federal financial ledgers Avery had provided to the SDNY, they decided to destroy Avery’s character instead.
Every major news network began running coordinated segments. Anonymous sources leaked heavily edited journal entries, old college photos, and false testimonies from disgruntled former acquaintances, painting Avery as a calculating, gold-digging sociopath who had married Liam solely to infiltrate the family and destroy them from within for fame.
Avery sat in a sleek television studio in Midtown Manhattan, watching a monitor display a live feed of Victoria’s lead attorney, Richard Vance (no relation to Marcus Vance), speaking to reporters outside the federal courthouse.
"Avery Sterling is a master manipulator," Richard Vance declared into a cluster of microphones. "She targeted a vulnerable, wealthy young man, manipulated her way into a billionaire family, and when she realized she couldn't access the generational wealth due to a perfectly standard pre-nuptial agreement, she fabricated and exaggerated financial discrepancies to destroy a legendary American family. She is holding an innocent child hostage from his father and grandmother."
"Are you ready, Avery?" a producer asked, interrupting her thoughts.
Avery looked up. She was dressed in a simple, elegant navy blue blazer, her hair falling naturally around her shoulders. No diamonds tonight. No custom Chanel. Just her.
"I'm ready," she said.
She stepped onto the set of The Tonight Report, the highest-rated prime-time news show in the country. The anchor, a formidable journalist named Evelyn Cross known for ripping public figures to shreds, gave her a tight, professional nod.
"Five seconds to air. Three... two..."
"Good evening," Evelyn Cross began, looking directly into the camera. "Tonight, we have an exclusive interview with the woman at the center of the storm that has gripped the financial and social worlds. Avery Sterling, the whistleblower who brought down the multi-billion-dollar Sterling financial empire. Avery, your mother-in-law’s defense team claims you are a disgruntled opportunist who stole corporate data to exact revenge for a family feud. How do you respond?"
Avery looked directly into the camera lens. She knew that millions of people, including Victoria from her upscale house-arrest penthouse and Liam from his temporary hotel suite, were watching.
"Evelyn, if I wanted money, I would have stayed married to Liam," Avery said, her voice calm, clear, and perfectly modulated. "If I wanted fame, I would have accepted the millions of dollars Victoria offered me in private checks over the last three years to simply walk away and leave my son behind. I am here today because the people who lost their life savings to Sterling Global Holdings don't have a prime-time voice. The public school teachers, the firefighters, the municipal workers whose pension funds were systematically drained by Victoria Sterling—they are the real victims. I didn't destroy an empire. I just turned on the lights so everyone could see the rats."
The interview was a triumphs. Avery’s authenticity and unwavering focus on the working-class victims completely neutralized the defense’s "gold-digger" narrative. Social media erupted in her favor once again. Clips of her response hit tens of millions of views within hours, trending globally on Facebook and X.
But behind the scenes, a darker trap was being set.
Two days later, Avery received a formal legal notice. Victoria Sterling, despite facing dozens of federal felony charges, had filed an emergency petition for temporary custody of baby Leo, citing Avery’s "unstable living conditions" and "calculated media exploitation of a minor."
Worse, Liam had signed the petition alongside his mother.
Avery’s hands shook as she read the document in Marcus Vance’s office. "How is this possible? She’s facing prison time!"
"She hasn't been convicted yet, Avery," Marcus explained grimly. "She’s out on a $50 million bail, confined to her Manhattan penthouse. Her lawyers are arguing that because you are under federal protection and actively involved in a high-profile criminal investigation, the child’s safety is compromised. They are using Liam’s clean record as the vehicle. Since Liam is the father and has no criminal charges against him, they are demanding the baby be returned to the Sterling residence immediately pending the trial."
"I will die before I let them take my son," Avery whispered, a terrifying coldness settling over her.
"The family court judge assigned to this custody hearing is Judge Harold Sterling-Hayes," Marcus said, his expression dark. "He’s a distant cousin of the Sterling family. Victoria is pulling every favor, spending every remaining hidden dollar she has to buy this custody order. If she gets Leo, she uses him as leverage to force you to recant your testimony to the feds."
"Then we have to stop the judge," Avery said.
"We can't," Marcus replied. "Unless we can prove the judge is actively being bribed or compromised by Victoria within the next forty-eight hours, the hearing will proceed, and given the family ties, he will likely grant Liam temporary full custody."
Avery stood up, walking to the window overlooking the city skyline. She closed her eyes, remembering a conversation she had overheard a year ago during a high-society charity gala at the Sterling Estate. Victoria had been drunk on expensive scotch, boasting to a circle of elite friends about how she "ensured the judiciary always remembered their friends."
Avery opened her eyes. "Marcus, Victoria doesn't use standard banks for her bribes. She’s too smart for that. When I was copying the ledger data from her private study, I found an old, encrypted digital drive hidden inside a vintage grandfather clock. I couldn't crack the encryption at the time, so I left it. I thought it was just old corporate records."

"If that drive contains proof of judicial bribery," Marcus said, his eyes widening, "it doesn't just stop the custody hearing. It puts Victoria away for life without a chance of a plea deal. But Avery, that drive is still inside the Sterling Estate. The property is under federal seizure notice, but the physical locks won't be changed until Friday. Victoria’s security team is still guarding the perimeter."
Avery turned around, a fierce determination in her eyes. "Then I’m going back to the Hamptons tonight. And I’m going to take exactly what’s mine."
