Chapter 2: The Shattered Glass
Richard slid his gold-plated house key into the lock. The heavy oak door swung open, and they both stepped inside, already drawing breath to call out for the butler to bring up the vintage champagne they had been saving to celebrate their newfound empire.
Instead, the words died instantly in their throats.
The entry hall was teeming with strangers. Two federal forensic accountants were systematically cataloging the contents of my father’s private wall safe, pulling out offshore banking ledgers and corporate shipping registries. Detectives in plainclothes stood near the grandfather clock, while a team of uniform officers blocked the exits to the veranda.
Vanessa froze, her hand flying to her throat as her crystal champagne glass slipped from her fingers. It hit the marble floorboards with a sharp, deafening shatter, sending a spray of sparkling liquid across the polished stone.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Richard roared, his voice cracking with an immediate, volatile panic as he tried to mask his terror behind old-money rage. "Who authorized you to breach my property? Get these people out of my house immediately, or I'll have the police chief dismantle your entire precinct!"

The lead detective didn't flinch. He simply reached into his breast pocket and produced a multi-page federal warrant, holding it inches from my father's face.
"The police chief didn't authorize this, Mr. Harlow," the detective said, his voice flat and entirely final. "The United States District Court did. We are executing a warrant for grand larceny, corporate asset fraud, and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder."
