CHAPTER 1 THE DOCTOR LOCKED THE DOOR

The ultrasound monitor suddenly went black.

Then the doctor reached for the lock.

Click.

The examination room door sealed shut.

"Mara..."

Dr. Elena Voss's voice shook so badly that Mara instinctively reached out to steady her.

"What is it?" Mara whispered.

The doctor's face had gone ghost white.

"If you love your baby," Elena said, barely above a whisper, "don't go home."

For several seconds, Mara could only hear the frantic pounding of her own heart.

At forty-five years old, she'd spent more than half her life believing motherhood would never happen. Every fertility treatment had failed. Every specialist had apologized. Every birthday had felt like another door closing forever.

Yet only moments ago, she'd heard the impossible.

A heartbeat.

Fast.

Strong.

Alive.

She pressed a trembling hand against her stomach.

"My baby..." she whispered.

Instead of smiling, Elena turned back toward the ultrasound machine with shaking hands.

"I need to show you something."

She clicked through several files before opening a patient record.

Mara frowned.

The name at the top wasn't hers.

Patient: Lila Harrow.

Her assistant.

Twenty-eight years old.

Bright.

Kind.

The woman who always remembered Mara's coffee order and called her "the strongest woman I've ever met."

Mara blinked.

"There must be some mistake."

"I wish there was."

Elena scrolled farther.

A pregnancy report.

Six weeks pregnant.

Then another line.

Father: Victor Lang.

The room tilted.

"No..."

Mara's lips barely moved.

"No..."

Victor.

Her husband.

Her fingers tightened around the examination table until her knuckles turned white.

Elena swallowed hard.

"She came here two weeks ago."

"Why would she use my doctor?"

"She didn't."

Elena looked directly into Mara's eyes.

"She used your insurance."

Mara stared.

"My...insurance?"

Elena nodded.

"She claimed she was your surrogate."

The words struck harder than any physical blow.

"I never hired a surrogate."

"I know."

Elena opened another document.

"This is why I locked the door."

A consent form appeared on the screen.

At the bottom...

Mara's signature.

Elegant.

Perfect.

Fake.

Her stomach twisted violently.

Someone had practiced her handwriting.

Someone had planned this.

"They're building a medical history," Elena whispered. "Someone wanted every record to show that another woman was carrying a child for you."

"But why?"

"I don't know."

Elena hesitated.

"But if you suddenly become pregnant yourself..."

She couldn't finish the sentence.

Mara did.

"...their story falls apart."

Silence swallowed the room.

Elena leaned closer.

"I've worked in medicine for twenty-three years."

"I've seen affairs."

"I've seen inheritance fraud."

"I've seen people fake illnesses."

"But this..."

She lowered her voice.

"This feels organized."

Mara forced herself to breathe.

Victor had kissed her goodbye that morning.

He'd smiled.

He'd even packed her favorite blueberry muffin for breakfast.

Now every memory felt poisoned.

Elena printed every document.

"I shouldn't be giving these to you."

"But if these records disappear..."

She folded them into a brown envelope.

"...you'll never know they existed."

Mara accepted it with numb fingers.

Before leaving, Elena grabbed her wrist.

"Promise me something."

"What?"

"Don't tell your husband you know."

Mara nodded.

For the first time since hearing her baby's heartbeat, fear overwhelmed happiness.

Someone had forged her signature.

Someone had used her identity.

Someone had involved her husband.

But she still didn't know why.

Outside the hospital, rain poured across the parking lot.

Mara sat inside her car for nearly ten minutes without starting the engine.

Her phone buzzed.

Victor.

❤️ Husband

She answered.

"How did it go, sweetheart?"

His voice sounded warm.

Gentle.

Perfect.

Mara closed her eyes.

"We need to talk."

A brief silence.

Then he laughed softly.

"Good news, I hope?"

"I'll tell you when I get home."

"I'll have champagne waiting."

Champagne.

As though he already knew.

As though he'd been expecting this day.

A chill crawled down Mara's spine.

The house glowed warmly against the evening rain.

Everything looked normal.

Too normal.

Victor opened the front door before she reached it.

"There she is."

He kissed her forehead.

His smile never faltered.

Inside the dining room sat an expensive bottle of champagne in a silver bucket.

Three crystal glasses.

Not two.

Mara froze.

Three.

"Who's coming?" she asked.

Victor looked almost surprised.

"Oh."

He smiled.

"Mother stopped by."

Right on cue, Claudine walked out from the kitchen wearing pearls and a flawless smile.

"My dear."

She embraced Mara.

Her perfume smelled overwhelmingly sweet.

Almost suffocating.

Then another familiar voice echoed behind them.

"I brought dinner."

Lila stepped inside carrying takeout bags.

She smiled exactly the way she always did at the office.

Warm.

Respectful.

Innocent.

Until Mara noticed it.

Lila's hand rested protectively over her own stomach.

Only for a second.

Then she quickly lowered it.

Nobody else seemed to notice.

But Mara did.

Every instinct inside her screamed.

Victor poured champagne.

"Well?"

He raised his glass.

"What did the doctor say?"

Mara slowly placed the brown envelope inside her purse.

She smiled.

For the first time in years...

She lied to her husband.

"The doctor said..."

She paused just long enough to watch every face around the table tense.

"...I'm pregnant."

For one perfect second...

Every mask shattered.

Victor's smile froze.

Lila's face drained of color.

Claudine nearly dropped her champagne glass.

Then, just as quickly...

Every expression returned to normal.

Too normal.

Victor laughed first.

"At forty-five?"

He kissed her cheek.

"What a miracle."

But his eyes...

His eyes weren't filled with joy.

May you like

They were calculating.

Like a man whose perfect plan had just gone terribly, terribly wrong.
