CHAPTER 3 THE WOMAN SHE TRUSTED

The photograph refused to leave Mara's mind.
Victor.
Lila.
Dr. Elena Voss.
Standing together in the hospital parking garage.
The timestamp was from yesterday.
Just thirty-seven minutes after Mara had left the ultrasound room.
She stared at the image until her eyes burned.
"No..."
The word escaped her lips like a prayer.
Not Elena.
She couldn't accept it.
The doctor had looked terrified.
She had warned Mara to run.
She had risked her career by handing over confidential records.
Unless...
That had been part of the plan, too.
Mara forwarded the photo to Dylan.
His reply came almost instantly.
Photos can lie. Metadata usually doesn't. Give me an hour.
An hour felt like a lifetime.
She spent it pretending to work while Victor performed the role of the perfect husband.
He brought her lunch.
Asked if she was tired.
Kissed her forehead in front of the employees.
Everyone smiled.
Everyone admired him.
Mara wondered how many monsters wore expensive suits and warm smiles.
At exactly 2:17 p.m., Dylan called.
"I've analyzed the image."
"And?"
"The timestamp is real."
Mara closed her eyes.
"But..."
His voice sharpened.
"The story isn't."
"What do you mean?"
"The photo was cropped."
"Cropped?"
"There was another person standing between Victor and Dr. Voss."
Mara's heart skipped.
"Can you recover it?"
"I already did."
A new image arrived.
Mara opened it.
Her breath caught.
Between Victor and Elena stood a tall man in a dark overcoat.
His face was partially hidden.
But one thing was unmistakable.
He was wearing a police detective's badge clipped to his belt.
"What is this?"
"I checked hospital security records," Dylan said.
"That detective visited Dr. Voss several times this month."
"Why?"
"I don't know."
"But Elena wasn't meeting Victor alone."
Mara felt a flicker of relief.
Maybe the doctor hadn't betrayed her after all.
Then Dylan added quietly,
"I found something else."
"What?"
"The detective retired six years ago."
Silence.
"So..."
"He shouldn't have a badge anymore."
That evening, Mara drove back to the hospital alone.
She didn't tell Victor.
She parked across the street and waited.
At 8:43 p.m., Elena finally walked out.
"Mara?"
The doctor's face filled with shock.
"What are you doing here?"
Mara held up the photograph.
"Tell me the truth."
Elena looked at it.
Her expression changed instantly.
"Where did you get this?"
"Does it matter?"
"Yes!"
Elena grabbed Mara's arm.
"Get in your car."
"What?"
"Now."
Before Mara could react—
A black SUV accelerated into the parking lot.
Its headlights flashed directly at them.
Elena's face drained of color.
"They found you."
"Who?"
"No time!"
She shoved Mara toward her car.
"Drive!"
The SUV swerved sharply.
Its engine roared.
Straight toward them.
Mara froze.
The vehicle wasn't slowing down.
Elena threw herself against Mara, knocking her to the pavement.
The SUV missed them by inches.
It crashed through a row of trash bins before speeding away into the night.
For several seconds, neither woman moved.
Mara could barely breathe.
"You...saved me."
Elena was trembling violently.
"They weren't trying to scare you."
She looked directly into Mara's eyes.
"They were trying to kill you."
An hour later, they sat inside a small twenty-four-hour diner on the edge of town.
Elena hadn't stopped checking the windows.
Finally, she spoke.
"The picture isn't what you think."
"Then explain it."
"The man wasn't a detective."
"What?"
"He was an investigator hired by your husband."
Mara frowned.
"But the badge—"
"Fake."
Elena wrapped both hands around her untouched coffee.
"Victor came to me three months ago."
"He wanted me to falsify your medical records."
Mara felt sick.
"I refused."
"So why meet him?"
"Because he threatened my daughter."
The words landed like a punch.
"My daughter is twelve."
Elena's voice cracked.
"He knew her school."
"He knew where we lived."
"He told me accidents happen every day."
Tears filled her eyes.
"I pretended to cooperate."
"So the forged paperwork..."
"I delayed everything."
"The warnings I gave you were real."
Mara believed her.
Not because of the tears.
Because Elena had nearly died in the parking lot.
Suddenly Elena reached into her purse.
"I was waiting for the right moment."
She slid a small silver flash drive across the table.
"I copied everything before they could destroy it."
"Everything?"
"Emails."
"Medical records."
"Voice recordings."
Mara stared at the tiny device.
"This can expose them."
Elena nodded.
"If we're lucky."
"If we're not..."
She looked toward the rain-soaked window.
"...neither of us will live long enough to use it."
Mara drove home after midnight.
The house was dark.
Victor was waiting in the living room.
No television.
No music.
Just silence.
"You were out late."
His smile looked calm.
Too calm.
"I couldn't sleep."
He stood and walked toward her.
"You should answer your phone next time."
"I left it in my purse."
"I called eight times."
He gently brushed a strand of hair behind her ear.
Then his fingers paused.
There was dried blood near her temple from the parking lot.
Victor stared at it.
His smile disappeared for the briefest second.
Then it returned.
"What happened?"
Mara forced herself to shrug.
"I slipped."
He nodded slowly.
"Be careful."
His eyes lingered on the cut.
Almost...
Disappointed.
As he walked upstairs, Mara heard him make a phone call.
His voice was barely audible.
"It failed."
A pause.
"No."
Another pause.
"She still has no idea."
Mara stood frozen in the darkness.
Inside her purse, the flash drive suddenly felt heavier than gold.
May you like
Because whatever was hidden inside it...
...someone had just tried to kill to protect.
