CHAP 7
Chapter 7: The Only Parent Who Stayed
Three months later, Michael moved into his college dorm on a full academic scholarship.
His roommate noticed a framed photograph on the desk.
It wasn't the official graduation portrait.
It wasn't the picture with the diploma.
It wasn't even taken on the stage.
The photo showed a young man hugging his mother in the middle of an auditorium aisle.
Behind them, glowing brightly above the doorway, was a red EXIT sign.
His roommate smiled.
"That's your favorite picture?"
Michael looked at it for a long moment.
"Yeah."
"It reminds me who got me here."
Years later, people would congratulate Michael for his success.
They would praise his discipline, his intelligence, and his determination.
Few would ever know about the woman who worked double shifts, skipped meals, and quietly carried the weight of every impossible year.
But Michael never forgot.
Because a diploma can recognize achievement.
Only a child can recognize sacrifice.
And whenever anyone asked him who inspired his life, he gave the same answer every single time.

"My mother."
"The only parent who stayed."
