CHAPTER 13 The Search
CHAPTER 13
The Search
The agents moved through the house with quiet efficiency.
No shouting.
No chaos.
Just the sound of drawers opening, cameras clicking, and evidence bags being sealed.
My mother remained seated in the living room.
She didn't protest.
She simply watched.
One agent carried out three locked filing boxes from her study.
Another wheeled away a desktop computer.
An evidence technician called from upstairs.
"Found a concealed safe."
Ethan, standing beside me, leaned in slightly.
"If she kept paper records, this is where they'll be."
Twenty minutes later, the lead agent emerged holding a thick leather ledger.
"Looks promising."
My mother's face finally changed.
For the first time...
She looked frightened.
The lead agent turned to her.
"Mrs. Whitmore, do you recognize this ledger?"
She hesitated.
"...No."
The agent opened it.
Every page contained handwritten entries.
Dates.
Account numbers.
Transfers.
Shell companies.
And signatures.
Not my father's.
Not Brielle's.
My mother's.
The room fell silent.
Dad slowly sank into a chair.
"You..."
His voice cracked.
"You told me those companies belonged to outside investors."
Mom looked at him without emotion.
"I told you what you wanted to hear."
Dad stared at the ledger as though his entire life had been rewritten.
"You used me."
"No."
She stood.
"I used your pride."
That evening, after the agents left with dozens of evidence boxes, Dad knocked on my apartment door.
He looked older than I had ever seen him.
His shoulders were slumped.
His eyes were bloodshot.
"I don't expect forgiveness."
I didn't answer.
"I failed you."
He swallowed hard.
"When your mother brought you home..."
"...I promised I'd protect you."
His voice trembled.
"And somewhere along the way..."
"I stopped paying attention."
Tears filled his eyes.
"I thought providing money made me a good father."
"It didn't."
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Finally, I said quietly,
"I needed a father."
"Not a provider."
Dad lowered his head.
"I know."
May you like
For the first time...
He cried.
