CHAPTER 15

Home

Six months later.

Whitmore Coastal Development had changed.

The board elected a new chairman.

Independent oversight became mandatory.

Every financial decision required transparency.

The company survived.

Stronger than before.

My father retired quietly.

Before leaving headquarters for the last time, he stopped outside my office.

"I'll always regret what I did."

I nodded.

"I know."

Neither of us pretended everything was fixed.

Some wounds heal slowly.

Some become scars.

But at least...

They had finally been acknowledged.

Brielle started over.

Not with another company funded by someone else.

She accepted an entry-level position at a nonprofit that helped struggling women rebuild their careers.

She earned her own paycheck.

For the first time in her life.

Whenever we spoke, it wasn't about money.

It was about life.

Slowly...

We became sisters.

One Saturday afternoon, I drove north to a small vineyard.

Lucas Bennett was waiting outside.

He looked nervous.

So was I.

For a few moments...

Neither of us spoke.

Then he smiled.

"You have Grace's eyes."

I smiled back.

"I've been told that."

He handed me a small wooden box.

Inside was every birthday card he had ever written.

Every Christmas letter.

Every photograph he had hoped I would someday see.

"I never stopped believing we'd meet."

I couldn't hold back my tears.

Neither could he.

He opened his arms.

This time...

I didn't hesitate.

That evening, I returned to my Malibu villa.

The ocean was calm.

The house was quiet.

Not lonely.

Peaceful.

Ethan arrived carrying two cups of coffee.

"You still working?"

I smiled.

"For once..."

"No."

He sat beside me on the terrace overlooking the water.

Neither of us felt the need to fill the silence.

After everything that had happened...

Silence no longer felt empty.

It felt safe.

I looked at the waves as the sun disappeared beyond the horizon.

For years, I believed family was something you were born into.

I was wrong.

Family is the people who choose to stand beside you when they have nothing to gain.

Some share your blood.

Some share your pain.

Some simply arrive when you need them most.

I had lost the family I spent my life trying to please.

May you like

But in the end...

I found the one I was always meant to have.
