Chapter 5: A Criminal Obsession
The detective looked around the silent kitchen.
Then back at Margaret.
"What we've found upstairs changes everything."
He motioned toward the evidence box.
"This isn't normal preparation for a custody case."
He paused.
"This suggests long-term surveillance, identity fraud, forged medical records, and a deliberate attempt to interfere with parental rights."
One officer stepped beside Margaret.
Another quietly readied a pair of handcuffs.
Alejandro never took his eyes off his mother.
"I trusted you."
She stared back without speaking.
The woman who had once baked birthday cakes, attended family dinners, and smiled for holiday photographs was gone.
In her place stood someone consumed by obsession.
Someone who had spent months—perhaps years—building a fantasy in which my child belonged to her.
The detective nodded to his officers.
"Mrs. Castillo, you're being detained pending further investigation."
As they led her toward the front door, she stopped.
Slowly, she turned toward me.
Her eyes were calm now.
Almost peaceful.
"You'll never be enough for him," she whispered.
Then she smiled.
Not a mother's smile.
Not even a human one.
A smile that sent ice through my veins.
The front door closed behind her.
The silence that followed felt heavier than any scream.

I thought the nightmare was finally over.
I had no idea it was only the beginning.
