PART 3 — Celeste’s Truth

In the dungeon below the palace, Celeste sat chained but unbroken.

When the guards came, she laughed before they even spoke.

ā€œLet me guess,ā€ she said. ā€œShe cried and now you think I’m the monster.ā€

The guard said nothing.

But the king entered behind them.

That silenced her.

Celeste lifted her chin.

ā€œYou always were sentimental,ā€ she said to him. ā€œThat’s why you lost her the first time.ā€

The king’s voice was cold.

ā€œTell me everything.ā€

Celeste smiled faintly.

ā€œYou already know everything that matters.ā€

He stepped closer.

ā€œI know you started a fire.ā€

ā€œI corrected a mistake,ā€ she replied. ā€œThat child was never meant to live. The prophecy saidā€”ā€

ā€œThe prophecy said she would either save this kingdom,ā€ the king interrupted, ā€œor destroy it depending on how we treated her.ā€

Celeste’s smile faded.

For the first time, something like uncertainty crossed her face.

ā€œThat’s not how my mother told it.ā€

The king leaned forward.

ā€œThen your mother lied.ā€

May you like

Silence.

And in that silence, Celeste finally looked afraid.
