CHAPTER 5 — THE LETTER THAT WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO EXIST

CHAPTER 5 — THE LETTER THAT WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO EXIST

Three months of peace can feel like a lifetime… or like a warning.

The glass sunroom had become my mother’s favorite place.

She called it “the room that forgave everything.”

But one morning, that illusion cracked.

It started with an envelope.

No return address.

No stamp that could be traced.

Just my name written in handwriting I hadn’t seen in years.

Victoria.

My hand stopped before I even opened it.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

“You think it’s over because I lost everything.
It isn’t.
You only saw the part they allowed you to see.”

At the bottom, one line:

“Ask your mother what really happened that night.”

My chest tightened.

I turned toward the sunroom.

She was there.

Feeding birds.

Calm.

Too calm.

And for the first time since I brought her home… I noticed something strange.

She never spoke about the basement unless I asked.

Never once volunteered details.

Not even when she woke up screaming in the hospital.

That night, I didn’t sleep.

And neither did the truth.
