CHAPTER 6 — WHAT THE BASEMENT HID

The next morning, I showed her the letter.

She didn’t deny it.

She didn’t even look surprised.

She simply set the teacup down slowly.

Then she said something I never expected.

“I didn’t want you to know everything.”

My stomach dropped.

“You were really there, weren’t you?” I asked.

Silence.

Then a nod.

“Yes.”

The word hit harder than any courtroom verdict.

She looked down at her hands.

“They didn’t just lock me there.”

A pause.

“When I saw things… I wasn’t supposed to see.”

The air changed.

“What things?”

Her voice broke slightly.

“Names. Deals. Transfers. People who were never supposed to meet.”

My mind raced.

Victoria’s empire hadn’t just been wealth.

It had been structure.

System.

Control.

My mother continued:

“I wasn’t the victim they thought I was.”

That was the moment everything shifted.

Because I realized something terrifying.

Maybe I hadn’t saved her from the truth.

Maybe I had interrupted it.
