CHAPTER ONE The White Coffin

CHAPTER ONE

The White Coffin **118**

Rain fell in slow, relentless sheets over St. Gabriel Memorial Cemetery.

More than a hundred black umbrellas surrounded a single white coffin.

It was heartbreakingly small.

Too small.

A tiny silver nameplate reflected the gray sky.

BABY CARTER
"Never Took His First Breath."

No flowers could soften the cruelty of those words.

Ella Carter knelt in front of the coffin, still wearing the pale blue hospital cardigan she'd been discharged in only hours earlier.

The IV bruises were still visible on her wrist.

Her empty arms cradled the teddy bear she had bought five months ago after hearing her baby's heartbeat for the first time.

She hadn't spoken a single word since the doctor whispered...

"We're sorry..."

A few yards away stood two men who once believed they saved lives.

Dr. Noah Carter.

The city's most respected trauma surgeon.

Beside him stood Charles Walker.

A decorated firefighter with three medals for bravery.

Today...

Neither looked like heroes.

Neither dared step closer to the coffin.

Because they both knew one horrifying truth.

If either of them had answered just one phone call...

The baby might still be alive.

The silence shattered beneath the sharp click of high heels.

Every head turned.

Megan Sullivan walked toward the funeral wearing an elegant black dress and dark sunglasses.

She carried a bouquet of white lilies.

The whispers began instantly.

"She actually came?"

"How shameless..."

"She's the woman who destroyed two families."

Someone spat onto the wet pavement.

Another guest muttered,

"Murderer."

Megan ignored every insult.

She stopped beside the tiny coffin.

Bent down.

Placed the flowers gently against the polished wood.

Her lips barely moved.

"I'm sorry..."

SLAP!

Ella's hand struck her face so hard the bouquet scattered across the soaked grass.

A streak of blood appeared at the corner of Megan's mouth.

No one tried to stop it.

No one thought she deserved mercy.

But then...

Megan smiled.

Not a mocking smile.

Not an arrogant one.

A strangely exhausted smile.

"If hitting me helps you breathe..."

she whispered.

"Then hit me again."

"That's enough!"

Noah rushed forward instinctively.

Without thinking...

He stepped between his wife...

and Megan.

The movement lasted less than a second.

But it destroyed whatever remained of Ella's heart.

She laughed.

A broken, empty laugh that sounded nothing like happiness.

"Even today..."

she whispered.

"You still choose her."

Noah opened his mouth.

No words came.

At the edge of the cemetery...

An elderly man wearing a gray overcoat quietly photographed the entire scene.

He immediately sent the picture to an unknown number.

A reply appeared almost instantly.

Phase One is complete.

The old man's expression never changed.

He simply walked away.

Meanwhile...

A little girl no older than eight ran toward Megan.

She clutched a rusted metal box with both hands.

"I found it..."

she said softly.

"It was exactly where you told me."

Megan froze.

For the first time all day...

Her hands trembled.

She slowly opened the box.

Inside were only three objects.

A melted firefighter badge.

A burned hospital identification card.

And...

A family photograph scorched around the edges.

In the picture...

A smiling firefighter lifted a little red-haired girl onto his shoulders.

The girl's face had survived the fire.

The man's hadn't.

On the back of the photograph...

Someone had written a sentence in faded ink.

Never trust the people who promise they'll save you.

Megan stared at those words.

The smile vanished from her face.

Something far older than grief flickered in her eyes.

Hatred.

Not sudden hatred.

The kind that had been fed...

for years.

She quietly closed the lid.

Blood trickled down her palm where the rusted edge had cut into her skin.

She didn't seem to notice.

Instead...

She looked directly at Noah.

Then Charles.

Neither man understood why.

Neither recognized the melted firefighter badge.

Neither recognized the burned hospital ID.

Yet both felt an inexplicable chill crawl down their spines.

As if...

they had seen those objects before.

Long ago.

Across the cemetery, Ella watched the exchange.

Something didn't make sense.

If Megan had truly won...

Why did she look...

like someone attending her own funeral?

Why was she carrying the belongings of people who had died years ago?

And why...

did the little girl call her...

"Big sister"?

That night...

After everyone had gone home...

Megan drove alone to an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of the city.

She unlocked an old steel cabinet.

Inside...

There were dozens of photographs.

Noah.

Charles.

Ella.

Olivia.

Their weddings.

Their anniversaries.

Their homes.

Their work schedules.

Every movement they had made...

for the past three years.

Pinned in the center of the wall was a newspaper clipping dated...

Fifteen Years Earlier.

The headline read:

"Firefighter and Hospital Staff Cleared of All Responsibility in Warehouse Fire That Claimed Seven Lives."

Megan reached out.

Her fingertips rested on the faded article.

A single tear rolled silently down her cheek.

Then she whispered into the darkness...

"They said justice would heal me."

"They lied."

"So..."

May you like

"I became justice."
