CHAPTER FOUR

The Woman Who Stole Two Husbands

Three years earlier...

Before the funeral.

Before the fire.

Before the baby died.

There had been a charity gala.

That was the night everything began.

Or so everyone believed.

The Grand Crescent Hotel glittered beneath crystal chandeliers.

Doctors, firefighters, judges, and city officials filled the ballroom.

It was the annual Heroes of Hope Foundation Gala.

Noah Carter had just been named Surgeon of the Year.

Charles Walker had received another Medal of Valor.

Their wives stood proudly beside them.

Ella wore an elegant ivory gown, one hand resting protectively on the tiny life growing inside her.

Rachel, Charles's wife, laughed as photographers called for another picture.

To everyone watching...

They looked like two perfect families.

No one noticed the woman standing alone near the champagne fountain.

She wore a simple emerald-green dress.

Long red hair rested over one shoulder.

She wasn't smiling.

She was studying them.

Every movement.

Every glance.

Every weakness.

Her name tag simply read:

Megan Sullivan.

Volunteer Coordinator.

"You've been staring at them for ten minutes."

A voice came from behind.

An elderly waiter smiled as he refilled her champagne glass.

"They're the city's favorite heroes."

Megan took the glass.

"I know."

"You admire them?"

She looked back at Noah and Charles.

A faint smile touched her lips.

"No."

"I've waited fifteen years to meet them."

The waiter laughed, thinking it was a joke.

It wasn't.

Across the ballroom...

Ella noticed the beautiful red-haired woman watching their table.

"Do you know her?"

she asked Noah.

He glanced over.

"No."

"I've never seen her before."

Rachel leaned toward Charles.

"She's gorgeous."

Charles chuckled.

"Not my type."

Megan heard every word.

She smiled to herself.

Not yet.

An hour later...

The charity auction began.

Guests applauded politely as expensive paintings and jewelry were sold for children's hospitals.

Then...

The lights suddenly flickered.

A waiter accidentally dropped a tray.

Red wine splashed across Megan's dress.

The ballroom gasped.

"Oh my God!"

The young waiter turned pale.

"I'm so sorry!"

Megan looked down at the ruined dress.

Then...

She smiled warmly.

"It's okay."

"Accidents happen."

The guests relaxed.

Everyone praised her kindness.

Everyone...

Except Ella.

She noticed something strange.

The tray hadn't slipped.

Someone had deliberately bumped into the waiter.

And just before it happened...

Megan had quietly taken one step forward.

As if...

She wanted the wine to spill.

Later that evening...

Noah found Megan alone in the hotel hallway.

She was trying to wipe the stain from her dress with a damp towel.

"It's hopeless."

she laughed softly.

"I think this dress is ruined."

Noah smiled politely.

"My wife keeps an emergency sewing kit in her purse."

"She can probably help."

Megan looked surprised.

"Really?"

Five minutes later...

Ella herself was helping Megan clean the dress.

Rachel joined them.

The four laughed together.

They exchanged phone numbers.

By the end of the evening...

It felt as though they had known each other for years.

As Noah and Charles walked away...

Megan watched them disappear into the crowd.

Her smile slowly faded.

She opened the Notes app on her phone.

A checklist appeared.

✔ Meet Noah.

✔ Meet Charles.

✔ Earn Ella's trust.

✔ Earn Rachel's trust.

Then...

A final unchecked line.

Become family.

Six months passed.

Megan became a regular guest at weekend dinners.

Birthday parties.

Holiday celebrations.

She baked cakes.

Remembered anniversaries.

Sent thoughtful gifts.

She volunteered at Ella's prenatal charity.

Helped Rachel organize firefighter fundraisers.

Everyone adored her.

Everyone...

Except Olivia.

Noah's younger sister.

One afternoon...

Olivia cornered Megan outside the hospital.

"I know what you're doing."

Megan tilted her head innocently.

"What am I doing?"

"You don't flirt with Noah in front of Ella."

"You do it when Ella leaves the room."

Megan smiled.

"That's a serious accusation."

"I've been watching."

Olivia stepped closer.

"You always make him feel like the smartest man in the room."

"You laugh at every joke."

"You ask him for help."

"You make him feel needed."

She lowered her voice.

"And you do the exact same thing to Charles."

For the first time...

Megan's smile reached her eyes.

"You're very observant."

"So stop."

Olivia snapped.

Before someone gets hurt."

Megan leaned close enough that only Olivia could hear.

"Oh..."

"Someone already did."

Olivia frowned.

"What?"

But Megan simply walked away.

That night...

Megan returned to her apartment.

She unlocked a hidden drawer beneath her desk.

Inside...

Lay two identical black notebooks.

One labeled:

NOAH

The other:

CHARLES

Each page contained handwritten observations.

Noah Carter

  • Feels guilty when he disappoints people.

  • Cannot ignore a crying woman.

  • Believes he can fix everyone.

  • Biggest weakness: his hero complex.

Charles Walker

  • Protective by nature.

  • Easily manipulated by praise.

  • Hates being called selfish.

  • Biggest weakness: his pride.

Megan calmly wrote another line beneath both names.

Neither man cheats because of desire.

They cheat because they need to believe they are heroes.

She closed the notebooks.

Then opened a third.

This one had no names.

Only one sentence filled the first page.

Revenge isn't taking their lives.

It's making them destroy everything they once loved... with their own hands.

Megan closed the journal.

Outside, lightning flashed across the city.

She looked at her reflection in the dark window.

For just a second...

The confident, elegant woman disappeared.

In her place...

She saw a frightened little girl with soot-covered cheeks...

Still waiting outside a burning warehouse.

Still waiting for someone to save her father.

Still waiting...

May you like

For a promise that had never been kept.
