CHAP 2

CHAPTER 2
The Woman Everyone Forgot
Friday night arrived wrapped in snow and golden city lights.
Luxury cars lined the entrance of the Grand Regency Ballroom.
Crystal chandeliers glittered above hundreds of New York's most powerful people.
Politicians.
Celebrities.
Investors.
CEOs.
The annual Carter Holdings Charity Gala had become one of Manhattan's most exclusive invitations.
Inside, Elijah Carter accepted congratulations with his usual composed smile.
He looked flawless in a tailored black tuxedo.
Confident.
Untouchable.
Greg leaned toward him.
"So..."
He smirked.
"Think your assistant showed up?"
Elijah sipped his champagne.
"I doubt it."
Tyler chuckled.
"You still owe me a thousand if someone actually dances with her."
"Not worried."
Across the ballroom, the orchestra changed songs.
The master of ceremonies welcomed another wave of guests.
Then—
The massive entrance doors opened.
One conversation stopped.
Then another.
Soon...
Silence spread across the ballroom.
A woman stepped inside wearing a midnight-blue gown that shimmered beneath the chandeliers like liquid sapphire.
Her dark hair fell in soft waves over her shoulders.
Elegant diamond earrings caught the light with every movement.
She walked with effortless confidence.
Not arrogance.
Confidence.
Every head turned.
Several men actually forgot their conversations mid-sentence.
Tyler whispered first.
"...Who is that?"
Greg stared openly.
"I have no idea."
Then Elijah turned.
The glass slipped slightly in his hand.
His heartbeat stumbled.
Impossible.
The woman walking toward him...
Had Rachel's eyes.
Rachel stopped only a few feet away.
She smiled politely.
"Good evening, Mr. Carter."
No disguise.
No oversized sweater.
No thick glasses.
Just Rachel.
Elijah forgot how to speak.
"You..."
She tilted her head.
"I clean up reasonably well."
Tyler nearly laughed in disbelief.
Greg looked from Rachel to Elijah several times.
"You're telling me..."
He pointed.
"That's your secretary?"
Rachel smiled.
"I've been his secretary for three years."
Within seconds, men from every corner of the ballroom began approaching.
"May I have this dance?"
"Would you honor me?"
"It would be my pleasure."
Rachel declined each invitation gracefully.
"I'm waiting."
"For someone?"
She smiled mysteriously.
"Perhaps."
Elijah couldn't stop watching her.
He suddenly remembered every morning she'd quietly placed coffee on his desk.
Every late night she'd stayed behind to help.
Every time he'd walked past her without really looking.
How had he never noticed?
Music filled the ballroom.
Before Elijah could gather enough courage to speak, another voice interrupted.
"Rachel Bennett."
An elderly gentleman in an immaculate tuxedo stood several feet away.
His silver hair reflected beneath the chandeliers.
The moment Rachel saw him...
Her smile softened.
"It's been a long time."
The gentleman walked forward.
Instead of shaking her hand...
He bowed respectfully.
The ballroom fell silent again.
One of the most influential financiers in Europe...
Bowing to Elijah's assistant.
Greg whispered,
"Who... is that?"
Tyler didn't answer.
He couldn't.
The gentleman smiled warmly.
"I've missed you, Miss Bennett."
Rachel nodded.
"I've missed you too."
Then he extended his hand.
"May I have this dance?"
Rachel accepted.
As they glided onto the dance floor, whispers exploded across the ballroom.
Elijah stood frozen.
None of this made sense.
Who exactly was the woman he'd worked beside every day?
Unable to contain his curiosity, Elijah discreetly pulled out his phone.
He opened the company's internal employee database.
Rachel Bennett.
Search.
Loading...
A moment later, the screen flashed red.
ACCESS RESTRICTED
He frowned.
He tried again.
Only one employment record appeared.
Five years.
Nothing before that.
No university.
No previous employer.
No background.
No archived files.
Nothing.
As though Rachel Bennett had appeared out of nowhere five years earlier.
Elijah looked up at the woman dancing effortlessly beneath the chandeliers.
