CHAP 7

CHAPTER 7

The King Was Never the Target

The Bennett estate erupted into chaos.

Security teams flooded every hallway.

Police sirens echoed beyond the iron gates.

Rachel ignored them all.

She stood frozen beside her father's empty bed, staring at the single black chess king resting on the pillow.

Someone hadn't just kidnapped Jonathan Bennett.

They had left a message.

This wasn't about money.

It was personal.

"The cameras?"

Rachel demanded.

The head of security looked pale.

"Disabled."

"How?"

"They were hacked exactly ninety seconds before the power failed."

"Ninety seconds?"

"Whoever did this knew the system better than our own engineers."

Daniel slammed his fist onto the table.

"No one gets inside this estate!"

But Rachel noticed something strange.

Her brother looked angry.

Not surprised.

The thought disappeared as quickly as it came.

Surely she was imagining things.

Across the Atlantic, Elijah's phone rang at 3:17 a.m.

The caller ID was unfamiliar.

He answered anyway.

A distorted voice spoke only one sentence.

"If Rachel Bennett dies..."

"...it's because you believed the wrong man."

The line went dead.

Within minutes, Elijah was on a private jet bound for London.

For the first time in his life, he wasn't chasing a business deal.

He was trying to save someone.

Twenty-four hours later, the kidnappers finally made contact.

A single encrypted email arrived.

No ransom demand.

No threats.

Only a GPS location and one instruction.

Rachel Bennett must come alone.

Daniel immediately objected.

"It's a trap."

"I know."

"You can't go."

"I have to."

"They'll kill you."

Rachel looked at the message again.

"If they wanted Father dead..."

"...they wouldn't have taken him alive."

She already understood something everyone else had missed.

Her father wasn't the objective.

He was bait.

She was the real target.

Against everyone's advice, Rachel drove alone to an abandoned shipping warehouse near the River Thames.

The enormous steel doors slowly opened.

Inside...

Jonathan Bennett sat unharmed in a chair.

Rachel rushed toward him.

"Father!"

Before she reached him—

Click.

Metal doors slammed shut behind her.

Floodlights illuminated the warehouse.

Slow applause echoed through the darkness.

Greg Sullivan stepped forward.

Perfectly dressed.

Perfectly calm.

"You've grown into an extraordinary woman."

Rachel stared at him.

"You murdered my mother."

Greg smiled.

"I expected a more original greeting."

Her father struggled against the ropes.

"Rachel!"

"Run!"

Greg laughed softly.

"No one's leaving yet."

He nodded toward the shadows.

More than twenty armed men emerged.

Rachel's heart pounded.

"You've spent thirty years believing this was about revenge."

Greg said.

"It never was."

He slowly placed a leather folder on the table.

"Your mother discovered something."

Rachel's breathing quickened.

"What?"

Greg's smile widened.

"The greatest financial fraud in modern history."

He opened the folder.

Inside were documents showing billions of dollars secretly moved through hundreds of corporations.

Rachel looked closer.

Two names appeared repeatedly.

Greg Sullivan.

Daniel Bennett.

She froze.

"No..."

Her voice barely existed.

Greg watched her expression with satisfaction.

"The person sitting at your family table..."

"...has been working with me for years."

Rachel turned toward her father.

Jonathan closed his eyes.

He couldn't deny it.

Her own brother.

Daniel.

The man who had brought her home.

The man she trusted most.

Had betrayed them all.

The warehouse doors opened once again.

Daniel walked inside.

Without shame.

Without fear.

Without hesitation.

He looked directly at Rachel.

May you like

"I'm sorry you had to find out this way."

Rachel felt the world collapse beneath her feet.
