CHAP 4

CHAPTER 4
The Name She Buried
Rachel had spent years convincing herself that the past could stay buried.
She was wrong.
The morning after the gala, a black Mercedes waited outside her apartment.
She knew who had sent it before the driver even stepped out.
"Miss Bennett."
He bowed respectfully.
"Mr. Harrison has arrived from London."
Rachel closed her eyes.
"So... he finally found me."
One hour later, she entered a quiet private lounge at Teterboro Airport.
A tall man in his early forties stood beside the window.
His tailored navy coat and calm posture radiated quiet authority.
When he turned, his normally composed face softened.
"Little sister."
Rachel's eyes filled with emotion.
"Daniel."
Without another word, they embraced.
It had been six years.
Too long.
Daniel stepped back and studied her.
"You've changed."
Rachel laughed quietly.
"You have no idea."
"I do."
His eyes lingered on her simple handbag.
"You actually look happy."
She didn't answer.
Because happiness had always been temporary.
They boarded a private jet bound for London.
Halfway across the Atlantic, Daniel finally spoke.
"Father is dying."
Rachel froze.
The sentence stole the air from her lungs.
"No..."
"I'm sorry."
"He asked for you."
She stared out the window.
"I told him never to look for me."
"He respected your wishes."
"Then why now?"
Daniel hesitated.
"Because there isn't much time left."
Rachel slowly closed her eyes.
Memories she had fought to suppress flooded back.
The mansion.
The security guards.
The endless charity galas.
Magazine covers.
Photographers shouting her name.
Luxury that felt more like a prison than a privilege.
And one night...
Blood on polished marble floors.
Her mother's body.
Her father's broken silence.
The beginning of everything.
Meanwhile...
Elijah couldn't let it go.
The name on the photograph haunted him.
Isabella Laurent.
He contacted every fashion agency he could find.
One finally called back.
"Yes."
"We represented Isabella Laurent."
"What happened to her?"
"She disappeared."
"Disappeared?"
"She walked away at the height of her career."
"No interviews."
"No farewell."
"No explanation."
"People assumed she'd died."
Elijah's pulse quickened.
He looked again at Rachel's eyes.
The same eyes.
The same smile.
The same tiny scar near her left eyebrow.
It couldn't be coincidence.
Rachel Bennett...
was Isabella Laurent.
Two days later, Elijah boarded the first flight to London.
He wasn't entirely sure why.
Curiosity.
Guilt.
Or something deeper.
His driver stopped outside an enormous estate hidden behind wrought-iron gates.
The gates opened automatically.
As his car rolled forward, Elijah stared in disbelief.
The mansion dwarfed anything he had ever owned.
Helicopters rested on private landing pads.
Dozens of security officers patrolled the grounds.
Luxury vehicles lined the circular driveway.
"Who lives here?"
The driver answered quietly.
"The Bennett family."
Elijah frowned.
"I thought this belonged to the Ashcroft Foundation."
"It does."
"They're the same family."
His heart skipped.
Inside the mansion, hundreds of employees stood in silence.
Rachel walked through the grand entrance—not as a guest.
But as someone who belonged there.
Every servant bowed.
Every executive stepped aside.
Every lawyer rose to their feet.
Then an elderly butler announced in a steady voice,
"Miss Rachel Bennett..."
He paused before adding words that made Elijah's blood run cold.
"...the sole heir has returned home."
Elijah stood frozen in the doorway.
The quiet woman who organized his meetings...
The woman he had humiliated over a thousand-dollar bet...
Was not only hiding her beauty.
She had been hiding a fortune greater than his own.
May you like
And he had just realized...
He had underestimated the most powerful woman he had ever met.
