Chapter 4 – The Trap Was Set

Chapter 4 – The Trap Was Set
Three days later, I walked into Grace's office carrying a cardboard box.
Inside were twenty-eight years of my life.
Property deeds.
Share certificates.
Investment records.
Insurance policies.
Every document that proved one simple fact.
Everything they wanted...
I had earned.
Grace looked inside the box and smiled.
"They think they're coming after your estate."
"They are."
She shook her head.
"No. They're coming after your control."
I frowned.
"What's the difference?"
"They don't want your money after you're gone." She paused. "They want it while you're still alive."
That sentence stayed with me long after I left her office.
Because it was true.
Richard wasn't waiting for an inheritance.
He was planning a takeover.
And Blake...
My own son had become the perfect weapon.
Over the next several days, Grace's legal team worked quietly.
Every property was reviewed.
Every investment account examined.
Every company share verified.
The process took hours.
Sometimes I sat silently in the conference room, signing documents until my hand cramped.
Grace never rushed me.
"This isn't about protecting your wealth," she reminded me.
"It's about protecting your freedom."
For the first time in months...
I felt like someone was standing beside me instead of reaching into my pockets.
Then came the final meeting.
Grace placed a thick stack of papers in front of me.
"The Morton Legacy Trust."
I stared at the title.
"It sounds... permanent."
"It is."
She explained every clause patiently.
If I became ill...
My company would continue operating.
If someone tried to manipulate me...
The trust would intervene.
If any beneficiary attempted coercion, fraud, threats, or physical intimidation...
They would immediately lose every right to inherit.
I looked up.
"Is that legal?"
Grace smiled.
"It has been tested many times."
"And it works?"
"It works because greedy people never believe the rule applies to them."
I signed my name.
Once.
Twice.
Ten times.
Twenty.
Each signature felt strangely liberating.
By the time I reached the final page, my entire estate no longer belonged directly to me.
It belonged to the trust.
Exactly as we intended.
Grace closed the folder.
"It's done."
"Can they undo it?"
"No."
"Challenge it?"
"They can try."
"And if they pressure me?"
Grace's smile grew just a little.
"I hope they do."
The invitation arrived the very next morning.
Family Meeting.
Mandatory.
Richard claimed everyone simply wanted to "discuss the future."
Linda called to tell me not to be stubborn.
Mark said accountants would be attending.
Even Blake texted me.
"Please don't make this harder than it needs to be."
I read the message twice before forwarding it to Grace.
A few seconds later, my phone rang.
"They're ready," she said.
"So are we."
I hesitated.
"What if Blake changes his mind?"
Grace was quiet for several moments.
Then she answered softly.
"If he walks into that room with love in his heart..."
"The trust changes nothing."
"But if he walks in with greed..."
She closed the sentence for me.
"...he'll destroy his own future."
I hung up and looked out the window.
Somewhere in the city, my son believed he was walking into a meeting where he'd become the new owner of everything I had spent a lifetime building.
He had no idea...
The papers waiting for him weren't surrender documents.
They were a test.

And before the day was over...
He was going to fail it in the worst possible way.
