Chapter 8 – Every Dollar Has a New Owner

"No..."

Richard whispered the word before Grace could finish reading.

"There is no way you would do this."

Grace looked at him calmly.

"I'm afraid she already has."

She turned the final page of the trust.

"The contingent beneficiary of the Morton Legacy Trust is..."

She paused.

"...the Morton Legacy Animal Rescue Foundation."

Silence.

Complete.

Absolute.

Then Aunt Linda gasped so loudly that everyone jumped.

"Animals?"

Her voice cracked.

"You're giving hundreds of millions of dollars... to animals?"

I looked directly at her.

"I'm giving it to loyalty."

Blake stared at me as though he no longer recognized my face.

"You can't be serious."

"I've never been more serious."

He laughed.

It wasn't amusement.

It was panic.

"So... that's it?"

"You'd rather help stray dogs than your own son?"

I folded my hands.

"My son?"

"You stopped acting like my son the moment you treated me like an obstacle instead of your mother."

His face flushed bright red.

"I made one mistake!"

"One?"

I shook my head.

"No, Blake."

"The shove wasn't the mistake."

"The shove was the moment your real character finally became impossible to hide."

Richard suddenly slammed his fist onto the table.

"This foundation doesn't even exist!"

Grace calmly reached into the binder again.

"It does."

She placed several incorporation documents in front of him.

"Registered four months ago."

"Federal tax approval received six weeks ago."

"Independent board appointed last month."

Richard flipped through the papers frantically.

Every page made his expression darker.

"You planned this..."

Grace nodded.

"Very carefully."

Blake looked at me with desperation replacing his anger.

"What about my apartment?"

"The penthouse?"

"My cars?"

Grace answered before I could.

"The downtown condominium is owned by the trust."

"The title transfers became effective three days ago."

"The luxury vehicles are trust assets."

"The insurance policies have already been reassigned."

Blake blinked.

"So..."

"I don't own any of them?"

"You never did."

Grace's words landed like a hammer.

"You were permitted to use them."

"Ownership and permission are very different things."

Richard stepped closer to me, lowering his voice.

"Evelyn..."

"Please."

It was the first time he had said please in years.

"Think about what you're doing."

"I am."

"Our son made a mistake."

"Our son?"

I smiled sadly.

"When he demanded my company..."

"He was your son."

"When he pushed me to the floor..."

"Suddenly he became ours?"

Richard looked away.

He had no answer.

Grace checked her watch.

"There's one final matter."

Everyone turned toward her.

"Based on today's events..."

"...I have already notified building security and local law enforcement regarding the physical assault."

Blake's eyes widened.

"What?"

"You called the police?"

"I reported an assault."

Richard exploded.

"This is a family matter!"

Grace closed the binder with a sharp snap.

"It stopped being a family matter the moment violence entered the room."

As if on cue...

Three loud knocks echoed through the conference room door.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

No one moved.

Then a calm voice came from the hallway.

"Building Security."

"We need Mr. Blake Morton to step outside."

Blake looked at his father.

Richard looked at me.

Neither of them knew what to do.

Because for the first time in their lives...

Money couldn't open the next door.

The handle slowly began to turn.
