Chapter 4 – The Child Nobody Knew About

Three months after selling the mansion, peace finally felt real.

My mornings belonged to me.

No shouting.

No footsteps that made my heart race.

No checking the front door twice before sleeping.

Then my phone rang.

Margaret's voice sounded unusually tense.

"Amelia... Daniel wants to see you."

I nearly laughed.

"He had that opportunity for three years."

"It's not about him."

There was a long silence.

"It's about a little girl."

...

The prison visitation room smelled like disinfectant and regret.

Daniel looked older than six months should allow.

His expensive suits had become a gray prison uniform.

His confidence had disappeared with them.

"You look healthy," he muttered.

"I am."

He swallowed.

"I have a daughter."

I stared without blinking.

"Her name is Lily."

The words hung between us.

"My affair with Lena started before we were married," he admitted. "She got pregnant. She never told me until after the arrest."

I felt nothing.

Not jealousy.

Not anger.

Only exhaustion.

"So?"

Daniel's eyes became wet.

"Lena died last week."

The room went silent.

"A drunk driver."

I closed my eyes.

Some tragedies don't deserve celebration.

He slid a photograph across the table.

A little girl with dark curls smiled while holding a stuffed rabbit.

"She's five."

"She has nobody."

Then he whispered the one sentence I never expected.

"Please... don't let my daughter become me."

For the first time in years...

Daniel Mercer wasn't asking for forgiveness.

He was begging for someone else's future.
