Chapter 6 – The Last Choice

The lawsuit could have destroyed Evelyn completely.
She had signed enough documents to spend the rest of her life in prison.
Margaret placed the final settlement on my desk.
"One signature," she said.
"Everything she owns becomes yours."
Outside the window, rain tapped softly against the glass.
I remembered another rainy night.
Blood in my mouth.
Coffee on the floor.
A frightened woman staring into a mirror.
If I signed...
Justice would become revenge.
There was a difference.
I finally picked up the pen.
And crossed out three pages.
"No criminal charges," I said.
Margaret frowned.
"Are you certain?"
"I am."
"What changed?"
I thought about Lily sleeping with her stuffed rabbit.
About children inheriting wounds they never created.
About how violence survives because someone always chooses to continue it.
"I'm ending the family tradition today."
Months later...
Evelyn voluntarily sold everything she still owned.
The money created a foundation for survivors of domestic violence.
She insisted it carry only one name.
Not Mercer.
Not Hale.
Simply...
Hope House.
She spent every Friday serving meals there.
Not because it erased the past.
May you like
Because nothing ever could.
But people can still choose what they become afterward.
