Chapter 5 – Evelyn's Final Secret

I had every reason to walk away.

Instead...

I met Lily.

She sat in a foster care office coloring butterflies with broken crayons.

When the social worker introduced me, she smiled.

"Were you Daddy's friend?"

I answered carefully.

"I used to know him."

She nodded.

"He cries now."

Children noticed everything.

...

Days later, Evelyn unexpectedly appeared outside my apartment.

Gone were the silk robes.

Gone was the expensive jewelry.

She looked twenty years older.

"I need to tell you something before I die."

I almost closed the door.

But something in her voice stopped me.

She handed me a faded envelope.

Inside was an old hospital record.

The name on the birth certificate wasn't Daniel.

It was mine.

I looked up sharply.

"What is this?"

Evelyn burst into tears.

"Your father and I built Mercer Holdings together."

My breath caught.

"When the company began failing decades ago, my husband stole everything... including your inheritance."

She shook violently.

"You weren't an orphan we pitied."

"You were the daughter we robbed."

Every insult.

Every slap.

Every humiliation...

Had happened inside a house built with money stolen from my own family.

"I watched history repeat itself," Evelyn whispered.

"I raised my son to become the same monster as his father."

"And I called it tradition."

She dropped to her knees.

"I don't deserve forgiveness."

"No," I answered quietly.

"You don't."

May you like

But even then...

I helped her stand.
