CHAPTER 3 — The Man They Mocked

Grayson Langford laughed.
It wasn't nervous.
It wasn't forced.
It was the laugh of a man who had spent decades believing no one on earth could touch him.
"You've got confidence," he said into the phone.
"I'll give you that."
Dominic Kane didn't answer.
The silence stretched for several seconds.
Then he spoke.
"I'm only going to say this once."
"Release Harper."
Grayson glanced at his daughter, who was kneeling on the bloodstained rug, cradling her shattered hand against her chest.
"You think you can threaten me?"
"No."
Dominic's voice was calm.
"I'm telling you what happens next."
Grayson smirked.
"You know who I am?"
"I know exactly who you are."
"A respected businessman."
"A generous donor."
"A man with friends in government."
He paused.
"And a father who breaks his daughter's hand for refusing to sign fraudulent documents."
For the first time that evening...
Grayson's smile faded.
"You should choose your words carefully."
"So should you."
Another pause.
Then Dominic asked one simple question.
"Has she signed?"
Grayson looked down at the unsigned papers scattered across the floor.
"No."
"Good."
That single word unsettled him more than any threat could have.
"What exactly is supposed to happen now?" Grayson asked with a chuckle.
"Are you going to sue me?"
"Call the police?"
"You have no evidence."
Dominic's reply came instantly.
"I don't need evidence."
"I have Harper."
Grayson burst into laughter again.
"You have a frightened girl hiding behind a telephone."
"I have judges."
"I have senators."
"I have every influential person in this city downstairs drinking my champagne."
He leaned closer to the receiver.
"You've already lost."
Dominic didn't argue.
Instead, he asked another question.
"How many guests are attending your gala tonight?"
Grayson frowned.
"What?"
"How many?"
"...About three hundred."
"I see."
Another silence.
Then Dominic said quietly,
"They'll all remember tonight."
Grayson rolled his eyes.
"I'm done wasting my time."
He lowered the receiver toward the floor.
"Wait."
Dominic's voice stopped him.
Grayson hesitated.
"What?"
"Take one last look at your daughter."
Confused, Grayson glanced toward Harper.
She was exhausted.
Covered in blood.
Barely able to stay upright.
"What about her?"
"It's the last time you'll ever see her as someone you control."
Grayson's expression hardened.
"You've become dramatic."
"No."
"I've become punctual."
Click.
The line went dead.
Grayson stared at the silent receiver.
Then, with deliberate force, he dropped it onto the marble fireplace and crushed it beneath his polished shoe.
Plastic shattered.
The ancient phone split into pieces.
"There."
He looked down at Harper.
"Now you're truly alone."
Harper met his eyes.
For the first time in years...
She wasn't afraid of looking directly at him.
"You shouldn't have done that."
Paige laughed.
"Oh, listen to her."
"The rescue is coming."
She clapped sarcastically.
"Maybe he'll fly in through the chimney."
Celeste folded her arms.
"Harper."
"You've embarrassed this family long enough."
"Get up."
"We're going downstairs."
Harper frowned.
"What?"
Grayson adjusted the cuffs of his tuxedo.
"The guests have been asking where you are."
"They deserve an explanation."
"I won't go."
"You don't have a choice."
Two security guards appeared in the doorway.
Neither wore uniforms.
Both wore expensive black suits.
Both had worked for Grayson for years.
Neither looked surprised to see Harper injured.
One of them stepped forward.
"I'm sorry, Miss Langford."
The apology sounded empty.
He reached for her arm.
Harper pulled away.
"Don't touch me."
The second guard sighed.
"Please don't make this harder."
Grayson smiled.
"Bring her downstairs."
The first guard carefully gripped her uninjured arm.
Even so, Harper winced.
Her legs shook as they forced her to stand.
Every step sent pain through her crushed hand.
She refused to cry.
Not in front of them.
As they left the library, the sounds of the gala grew louder.
Soft piano music.
Crystal glasses clinking.
Elegant laughter.
No one downstairs had any idea what had happened only moments earlier.
The grand staircase glittered beneath enormous crystal chandeliers.
Hundreds of guests turned as Grayson descended first, smiling warmly as though nothing were wrong.
"Ladies and gentlemen," he announced cheerfully.
"I apologize for the brief interruption."
"A small family misunderstanding."
Several guests laughed politely.
Others nodded.
Harper looked around the ballroom.
Judges.
Corporate executives.
Television personalities.
Every one of them admired her father.
None of them noticed the blood hidden beneath the sleeve she wrapped around her injured hand.
Paige slipped beside her and whispered,
"See?"
"No one believes you."
"They never will."
Grayson accepted a fresh glass of champagne from a waiter.
"As I was saying..."
"My daughter has been under tremendous emotional stress since her mother's passing."
A wave of sympathetic murmurs spread through the room.
"Unfortunately," he continued,
"Grief sometimes causes people to imagine terrible things."
Harper stared at him in disbelief.
He was turning her abuse into a public performance.
"My daughter believes..."
He smiled sadly.
"...that I've somehow betrayed her."
A few guests actually looked at Harper with pity.
Not because they thought she'd been abused.
Because they thought she'd lost her mind.
Harper felt her chest tighten.
This was exactly how he'd controlled her for years.
He never needed to silence her.
He simply made sure no one would ever believe her.
Grayson picked up the inheritance documents.
"I only wanted her to sign paperwork confirming the family trust."
He held out a pen.
"Harper."
"Let's end this."
The ballroom became perfectly still.
Three hundred pairs of eyes watched her.
Waiting.
Judging.
Expecting.
Paige leaned close enough that only Harper could hear.
"Go ahead."
"Call for your billionaire."
"He isn't coming."
The words had barely left her mouth...
When a deafening explosion echoed through the mansion.
BOOM.
The massive front doors flew inward with such force that both panels slammed against the marble walls.
The music stopped.
Champagne glasses froze halfway to waiting lips.
Every guest turned toward the entrance.
Heavy footsteps echoed across the marble floor.
One man walked inside.
Alone.
Perfectly tailored black suit.
Calm expression.
Cold gray eyes.
Dominic Kane had arrived.
May you like
And suddenly...
No one in the ballroom could remember how to breathe.
