CHAPTER 5 — By Dawn, the Mansion Began to Confess

For the first time in thirty years...

Grayson Langford looked afraid.

Only for a second.

But Harper saw it.

The tiny crack beneath the polished smile.

The uncertainty in his eyes.

He quickly recovered.

"This is illegal."

His voice rang across the ballroom.

"You think you can intimidate me with a few expensive cars?"

Dominic didn't answer.

Instead, he looked toward the entrance.

A man in a navy suit walked inside carrying a leather briefcase.

Then another.

And another.

None of them looked like bodyguards.

They looked like accountants.

Lawyers.

Auditors.

Behind them came several women carrying sealed document boxes.

Every movement was organized.

Deliberate.

Professional.

One of the guests frowned.

"Who are those people?"

Dominic finally spoke.

"The people who have been reviewing the Langford Foundation for the last eight months."

The ballroom erupted into whispers.

Grayson's smile froze.

"What did you say?"

Dominic took another step.

"I didn't come here tonight because Harper called me."

"I came because tonight was the last piece I needed."

Harper stared at him.

"You... knew?"

Dominic finally looked at her.

"I knew something was wrong."

"I didn't know it was this bad."

His eyes briefly rested on her injured hand.

His jaw tightened.

"I was too late."

Harper slowly shook her head.

"No."

"You came."

For a fraction of a second...

The coldest man in the room seemed almost human.

Then he turned back toward Grayson.

A lawyer opened the leather briefcase.

Stacks of files covered the nearest table.

One by one.

Each labeled.

Offshore Transfers.

Foundation Accounts.

Property Acquisitions.

Tax Records.

Shell Companies.

Grayson's face lost its color.

"Impossible."

Dominic nodded toward the documents.

"You stole donations intended for children's hospitals."

"You moved millions through fake charities."

"You forged signatures."

"You laundered money through your own foundation."

Each accusation landed like another hammer blow.

Guests began backing away from Grayson.

A senator quietly handed his champagne glass to a waiter and slipped toward the exit.

A television anchor lowered her phone.

Several board members exchanged horrified looks.

Celeste's confidence vanished.

She grabbed Grayson's arm.

"You said everything was protected."

"It was."

He whispered.

"It was."

Paige looked around desperately.

"This is fake."

She pointed toward Dominic.

"He made all this up."

One of the attorneys calmly slid a thick folder across the table.

"Your signature appears on forty-three financial transfers, Miss Langford."

Paige stopped talking.

Another investigator stepped forward.

"And yours."

He handed a second folder to Celeste.

Celeste's hands began to shake.

"I never..."

"You signed every approval."

"You simply never read them."

Grayson finally exploded.

"This is a setup!"

He slammed both hands onto the table.

"I'll sue every one of you!"

Dominic remained perfectly still.

"You can try."

"But before that..."

He nodded toward the ballroom doors.

Three detectives walked inside.

Badges flashed beneath the crystal chandeliers.

The music had long since stopped.

No one spoke.

One detective approached the evidence table.

"We received the files two hours ago."

Grayson spun toward Dominic.

"You called the police?"

"No."

Dominic's answer was immediate.

"I called forensic accountants."

"They called the police."

A ripple of nervous laughter spread through several guests.

Not because anything was funny.

Because they suddenly realized this wasn't a private family dispute anymore.

This was the collapse of an empire.

Grayson pointed directly at Harper.

"She's lying."

"She planned this."

"She worked with him."

Harper stared at the man who had raised her.

Even now...

He wasn't trying to save his daughter.

He was trying to save himself.

Dominic looked at Harper.

"Come here."

This time...

No one stopped her.

The security guards stepped aside without being asked.

Harper crossed the ballroom on trembling legs.

When she reached Dominic, she almost collapsed.

He caught her gently before she fell.

Careful not to touch her injured hand.

"You need a doctor," he said quietly.

"I'm fine."

"No."

His voice softened.

"You're surviving."

"That's different."

Harper looked up at him.

For the first time that night...

She allowed herself to believe she might actually leave this mansion alive.

Behind them, Grayson shouted again.

"You can't prove anything!"

One of the investigators calmly opened the final document box.

"There is one more item."

He removed a sealed envelope.

Addressed in Grayson's own handwriting.

The investigator handed it directly to Dominic.

Dominic didn't even open it.

He simply passed it across the table.

"Read it."

Grayson frowned.

"What is this?"

"Go ahead."

With trembling fingers, Grayson opened the envelope.

His face turned white.

Inside...

Was not another financial report.

Not another audit.

Not another lawsuit.

It was a federal arrest warrant.

His name appeared in bold letters across the top of the page.

GRAYSON LANGFORD.

Charges included fraud, money laundering, tax evasion, conspiracy, and felony assault.

The paper slipped from his fingers.

It floated silently onto the marble floor.

No one bent down to pick it up.

One detective stepped forward.

"Mr. Langford..."

He reached for a pair of handcuffs.

"You are under arrest."

Grayson staggered backward.

May you like

For the first time in his life...

No one came to save him.
