CHAPTER 6 — By Sunrise, She Was Finally Free

"No..."

Grayson Langford stumbled backward.

"This is a mistake."

The detective remained expressionless.

"Mr. Langford, turn around."

"You don't understand who I am."

"We do."

Another detective stepped forward.

"That's exactly why we're here."

Grayson looked desperately around the ballroom.

His senators.

His judges.

His business partners.

The people who had applauded his speeches only an hour earlier.

None of them moved.

None of them defended him.

One by one...

They quietly stepped away.

As though standing too close to him might ruin them as well.

"You can't abandon me!"

Grayson shouted.

"I built your careers!"

No one answered.

Celeste suddenly grabbed his arm.

"Do something."

Her voice trembled.

"Tell them they're wrong."

Grayson yanked his arm away.

"This is your fault!"

"My fault?"

"You signed the documents!"

"You told me they were routine!"

The detectives watched in silence as the perfect marriage unraveled in seconds.

Paige's mascara streaked down her cheeks.

She pointed at Harper.

"This was all her plan!"

"She's destroying our family!"

Harper looked at her calmly.

"No."

"I stopped letting you destroy me."

Those words hit harder than any slap.

Paige had no response.

The lead detective stepped forward again.

"Mr. Langford."

"Last warning."

"Turn around."

Grayson slowly looked toward Dominic.

"You."

His voice was filled with hatred.

"You think you've won?"

Dominic adjusted the cuff of his suit.

"This was never about winning."

"It was about ending it."

The handcuffs clicked shut.

The sound echoed through the silent ballroom.

For Harper...

It sounded like the end of twenty-six years.

Grayson twisted toward her one last time.

"You'll regret this."

"I raised you."

"I gave you everything."

Harper held his gaze.

"No."

"My mother did."

"You only took everything away."

For the first time in his life...

Grayson Langford had nothing left to say.

The detectives escorted him toward the front entrance.

Camera flashes exploded outside.

News crews had already arrived.

Every step Grayson took was captured forever.

The man who had spent decades protecting his public image...

Walked out of his own mansion in handcuffs before sunrise.

The front doors closed behind him.

Silence filled the ballroom.

Celeste slowly sank into a nearby chair.

Paige covered her face and sobbed.

The guests quietly collected their coats and left without another word.

Within minutes...

The grand ballroom was almost empty.

Only Harper and Dominic remained standing near the center of the room.

The enormous mansion suddenly felt strangely quiet.

Harper looked down at her bruised hand.

"I ruined everything."

Dominic looked at her.

"No."

"You survived everything."

"There's a difference."

She laughed weakly.

"I called you because I didn't know what else to do."

"I'm sorry."

He frowned.

"For what?"

"For dragging you into this."

Dominic shook his head once.

"You didn't."

"You asked one question."

She remembered the words she'd whispered into the old telephone.

"Can you come get me?"

"I answered it."

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

A doctor approached and carefully wrapped Harper's injured hand in a temporary splint.

She barely noticed.

She was still staring at Dominic.

"There was something my father said."

Dominic waited.

"He told me..."

"...men like you don't save broken girls."

For the first time that night...

A faint smile touched Dominic's face.

It wasn't warm.

It wasn't amused.

It was simply honest.

"He was right."

Harper blinked.

"What?"

"I don't save broken girls."

Confusion crossed her face.

"Then... why did you come?"

Dominic looked toward the front doors where dawn's first light was beginning to spill across the marble floor.

"When I walked into this house..."

"I didn't see a broken woman."

"I saw someone who had spent twenty-six years refusing to become the person her abusers wanted."

He turned back to her.

"That isn't broken."

"That's strength."

Harper felt tears fill her eyes again.

Not from pain.

Not from fear.

From relief.

Dominic continued quietly.

"I didn't come here to rescue you."

"I came to make sure no one ever convinced you that you needed permission to be free."

Outside...

The first rays of sunlight illuminated Ravenshore Mansion.

The estate that had once felt like a prison now stood silent behind them.

Crime scene investigators moved through its halls.

Evidence boxes replaced crystal champagne towers.

Luxury had given way to truth.

Harper took one slow step toward the front door.

Then another.

No one stopped her.

No one ordered her back.

No one demanded another signature.

She crossed the threshold as the morning sun warmed her face.

For the first time since she was a little girl...

She didn't feel like Grayson Langford's daughter.

She felt like herself.

Dominic stopped beside the waiting car and opened the passenger door.

"Where to?"

Harper looked back one last time at the mansion.

"I don't know."

He nodded.

"Good."

She frowned.

"Why is that good?"

"Because for the first time..."

"The choice is yours."

Harper smiled.

A real smile.

The kind she'd almost forgotten existed.

She stepped into the car.

May you like

As it drove away from Ravenshore Mansion...

She never looked back again.
