Chapter 3 — The Cover-Up

Chapter 3 — The Cover-Up
Before security could arrive, another figure rushed forward.
Margaret Carter.
Richard's wealthy mother.
Elegant pearls rested around her neck, but the kindness in her smile disappeared instantly.
She seized Claire's wrist with surprising strength.
"Come with me."
Claire resisted.
"I didn't do anything!"
Margaret tightened her grip.
"You're leaving."
Now."
Claire struggled harder.
Richard stepped closer.
His voice became almost desperate.
"Get her out before anyone records this!"
Evelyn frowned.
Before anyone records...
Not before anyone gets hurt.
Not before anyone panics.
Before anyone records.
That sentence echoed inside her mind.
Claire suddenly ripped her arm free.
"No!"
As everyone watched, she reached inside her uniform and pulled out something wrapped beneath her shirt.
A faded blue hospital wristband.
The name printed on it had nearly disappeared.
Evelyn froze.
Without thinking, she opened her evening clutch.
Hidden inside was another blue hospital wristband.
She had carried it for years.
The only thing left from her forgotten childhood.
Both women stared.
The bands matched perfectly.
Same hospital.
Same birth date.
Same patient number...

Except for one final digit.
The room seemed to stop breathing.
