CHAPTER 1 — THEY BURIED HER ALIVE

The rain began long before sunrise.

By the time the funeral procession reached Blackwood Cemetery, the storm had become almost biblical. Thunder rolled across the sky in long, violent waves, while freezing rain hammered the polished black umbrellas gathered around a freshly dug grave.

At the center of the mourners stood Richard Carter.

Fifty-four years old.

Founder of Carter Biotech.

One of the richest men in America.

Today, however, he looked like a man who had lost everything.

His silver hair clung to his forehead. His expensive black suit was soaked through, but he didn't seem to notice. His eyes never left the white coffin suspended above the muddy grave.

Inside lay his only child.

Emily Carter.

Twenty-seven.

Brilliant.

Kind.

The future CEO of the Carter empire.

Official cause of death:

Acute neurological failure.

The diagnosis had come so suddenly that even the doctors seemed stunned. Forty-eight hours after collapsing during a charity gala, Emily had been pronounced dead.

Richard still couldn't understand how a healthy young woman had disappeared in less than two days.

He reached out, placing a trembling hand on the coffin.

"I'm sorry..." he whispered.

"I should have protected you."

Beside him, Victoria Carter gently rested a hand on his arm.

She was thirty-four, elegant even in mourning, wearing a perfectly tailored black dress beneath a rain-soaked coat. Her mascara had begun to run, leaving dark trails down her cheeks.

"You did everything you could," she whispered.

Richard nodded without answering.

The priest stepped forward.

"We now return Emily Carter to the earth..."

The cemetery workers slowly released the ropes.

The white coffin began descending into the darkness.

Then—

A scream shattered the storm.

"STOP!"

Every head turned.

A young woman in a drenched white medical uniform came sprinting through the cemetery gates. She crashed through rows of mourners, knocking umbrellas aside as mud splashed beneath her shoes.

"STOP THE FUNERAL!"

One of the grave workers tried to block her.

She shoved him away with surprising strength.

The ropes slipped from his hands.

The coffin jerked violently in midair.

Gasps erupted from every direction.

"What the hell is she doing?"

"Is she insane?"

"Security!"

The woman ignored every voice.

She stumbled to the edge of the grave, breathing so hard that her entire body shook.

Rain streamed down her face.

Her white uniform was stained with mud and blood.

In her right hand—

She held a tiny silver medical vial.

Richard stared at her.

"Who are you?"

The woman looked directly into his eyes.

"My name is Sarah Bennett."

She swallowed hard.

"I'm an ICU nurse at St. Matthew Medical Center."

Her voice cracked.

"Your daughter isn't dead."

Silence.

Not even the thunder seemed loud enough to interrupt that moment.

Richard blinked.

"What...?"

Sarah lifted the vial.

"They buried a living woman."

The words struck the crowd like lightning.

Someone laughed nervously.

Another person crossed themselves.

The priest stepped backward.

Richard's expression slowly hardened.

"My daughter died two days ago."

"I saw her."

"I signed the papers."

"The doctors—"

"They lied."

Sarah shouted over him.

"They declared her dead while her heart was still capable of restarting!"

Richard stared.

His lips moved.

No sound came out.

Victoria suddenly stepped forward.

"Enough."

Her voice was calm.

Controlled.

"Mr. Carter has suffered enough today."

She looked toward the cemetery staff.

"Remove her."

Two security guards hurried toward Sarah.

She backed away, clutching the vial tightly.

"No!"

"You have to listen!"

"This medicine—"

She held the vial high.

"This is the original medication Emily was supposed to receive."

Richard frowned.

"What do you mean..."

Sarah's eyes filled with tears.

"Someone switched her medication."

The storm seemed colder.

Richard slowly looked toward the white coffin.

"No..."

Sarah nodded.

"The drug she received slowed her heartbeat to almost nothing."

"It slowed her breathing."

"It made every monitor believe she was dead."

Richard felt his knees weaken.

"That's impossible."

"It isn't."

"I've seen it before."

The security guards grabbed Sarah's arms.

She struggled violently.

"Let me go!"

"Every minute matters!"

"If she's buried alive—"

Richard suddenly shouted.

"WAIT!"

Everyone froze.

Even the guards stopped moving.

Richard walked toward Sarah.

Step by step.

His soaked shoes sank into the mud.

When he reached her, he spoke quietly.

"If..."

"If what you're saying is true..."

His voice trembled.

"Why didn't you come sooner?"

Sarah's face collapsed.

"I tried."

"I called the hospital."

"I called the police."

"I tried to stop the ambulance."

"No one listened."

"They told me I was hysterical."

She lowered her voice.

"Someone wanted her buried before anyone asked questions."

Richard felt ice crawl through his veins.

He looked again at the vial.

"Who?"

Sarah slowly turned.

She raised one shaking finger.

Pointing directly at Victoria.

The entire cemetery gasped.

Victoria didn't move.

Didn't blink.

Sarah screamed—

"She changed the medication!"

Richard looked from Sarah...

to Victoria...

back to Sarah.

His mind refused to accept what he had just heard.

Victoria's expression remained heartbreakingly calm.

"This poor girl is traumatized."

"Richard..."

"You know me."

"I loved Emily."

Sarah laughed bitterly.

"Loved her?"

"You visited her room twelve minutes before she collapsed."

Victoria's face changed.

Only for a fraction of a second.

But Sarah saw it.

So did Richard.

"What..."

Richard whispered.

"You were in Emily's hospital room?"

Victoria hesitated.

"Yes..."

"I came to say goodbye."

Sarah shook her head.

"No."

"You came alone."

"You sent the nurse outside."

"You stayed exactly four minutes."

"When you left..."

"Emily's IV medication had been changed."

Victoria took a step back.

"You're lying."

Sarah reached into her pocket.

She pulled out a small hospital ID badge.

"This is mine."

"I was on duty."

"I saw everything."

Richard's breathing became heavier.

"Tell me..."

He looked at Victoria.

"Tell me she's lying."

Victoria opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

For the first time...

Fear appeared in her eyes.

Then—

Something unexpected happened.

A cemetery worker suddenly shouted.

"Sir!"

Everyone turned.

The white coffin had almost disappeared beneath the edge of the grave.

One of the ropes had slipped loose.

The coffin hung at an angle.

And then...

Very softly...

Barely audible beneath the pounding rain...

Came a sound.

...

Knock.

Everyone looked around.

Another knock.

Softer this time.

Knock...

Knock...

Richard's eyes widened.

"No..."

The worker stepped away from the grave.

"I..."

"I heard something."

Sarah screamed at the top of her lungs.

"GET HER OUT!"

Richard didn't hesitate.

He threw himself into the muddy grave with both hands.

"HELP ME!"

The mourners rushed forward.

Men in expensive suits dropped to their knees beside construction workers.

Everyone grabbed the ropes.

Everyone pulled.

Mud exploded in every direction.

The coffin slowly rose from the darkness.

Rain poured across its polished white lid.

Richard clawed desperately at the brass handle.

"Emily!"

No answer.

He grabbed the lid.

His hands slipped.

Again.

Again.

Finally—

The locks snapped open.

The lid lifted just a few inches.

A freezing gust of air escaped from inside.

Richard stared into the darkness.

His heart stopped.

Because lying inside...

Emily's right hand was no longer resting peacefully across her chest.

It was pressed against the inside of the coffin lid.

Every fingernail had been torn away.

Fresh blood covered the white satin lining.

And as the lid opened another inch...

One blood-covered finger...

May you like

Moved.
