CHAPTER 9 — THE TRAITOR AMONG US

No one moved.

William Hayes' final words echoed through the laboratory like a curse.

"He's standing beside you."

Every person instinctively turned to look at everyone else.

Richard tightened his grip on the pistol.

Sarah glanced at Sophia.

Sophia looked toward Victoria.

The remaining security guards slowly raised their weapons.

For one unbearable moment, everyone became a suspect.

The countdown continued.

01:17

01:16

Richard broke the silence.

"Nobody moves."

His voice was steady, but his heart was pounding.

William had spent decades manipulating people.

This could easily be another lie.

Sarah looked around the room.

"If one of us is working for the Director, why reveal it now?"

Sophia answered quietly.

"Because paranoia is more powerful than bullets."

Richard slowly lowered his gun.

"Exactly."

"He wants us to destroy each other."

Before anyone could speak again, one of the guards suddenly shouted.

"Sir!"

Everyone turned.

Emily was gone.

The stretcher was empty.

"Emily!" Richard yelled.

A weak voice echoed from the far side of the laboratory.

"I'm here..."

They rushed toward the sound.

Emily was kneeling beside a large steel cabinet that had fallen during the explosions.

"I found something."

Together, they pushed the cabinet aside.

Hidden behind it was a thick steel door Richard had never seen before.

Sophia frowned.

"That wasn't on the original floor plan."

Sarah noticed a fingerprint scanner beside the door.

"No keypad."

"No lock."

"Only biometric access."

Richard stepped closer.

The scanner suddenly lit up.

IDENTITY CONFIRMED

The steel door unlocked with a heavy mechanical click.

Everyone stared.

Richard looked confused.

"It recognized me."

Sophia's expression darkened.

"This wasn't built for the Director."

"It was built for you."

The door slowly opened.

Inside was a narrow concrete corridor leading to a circular underground chamber.

Unlike the destroyed laboratory, this room was untouched.

No dust.

No broken equipment.

Just a single glass display case standing beneath a spotlight.

Inside the case rested a thick black binder.

Across its cover were embossed silver letters.

PROJECT LAZARUS

Richard's breathing became uneven.

"I destroyed this..."

Sarah approached carefully.

"You said you burned every file."

"I thought I did."

Sophia scanned the room.

"This place is different."

"It wasn't used for experiments."

"It was used to preserve evidence."

Richard opened the binder.

The first pages contained technical research.

Neurological mapping.

Suspended metabolism.

Experimental compounds.

Nothing unexpected.

Then he reached the final section.

Personnel Records.

Every scientist who had worked on Project Lazarus.

Most names meant nothing.

Then one name stopped him cold.

Chief Research Director

Dr. Eleanor Carter

Richard's late wife.

Emily gasped.

"Mom?"

Richard stared at the page.

"No..."

"She told me she resigned before the project began."

Sophia slowly shook her head.

"She didn't resign."

"She led it."

Richard flipped through the remaining pages with trembling hands.

Photographs.

Laboratory reports.

Handwritten notes.

His wife's signature appeared everywhere.

Sarah looked at one report and froze.

"Richard..."

He looked up.

She handed him a faded photograph.

It showed Eleanor Carter standing inside the laboratory twenty-eight years earlier.

Beside her...

stood William Hayes.

And another man.

His face had been deliberately scratched out of the photograph.

Only one detail remained visible.

A black raven pendant.

Sophia whispered,

"The Director."

Richard suddenly understood.

"My wife knew him."

"Before she met William."

"Before Carter Biotech."

Everything he believed about his family's history had begun to collapse.

Then Emily noticed something folded into the back cover of the binder.

A handwritten letter.

Addressed to Richard.

The paper had yellowed with age.

Richard recognized the handwriting instantly.

Eleanor's.

His hands trembled as he opened it.

Richard,

If you're reading this, then I failed.

The Director isn't building a company. He's building a family.

He doesn't recruit strangers.

He raises children to become copies of the people he needs.

If he ever reaches Emily... run.

Because once he succeeds...

You won't know which daughter is yours anymore.

Silence filled the chamber.

Richard slowly lowered the letter.

Sophia looked at him.

"Now you understand."

Sarah frowned.

"What does she mean?"

Before anyone could answer—

A loud electronic chime echoed through the room.

Every monitor switched on automatically.

The countdown disappeared.

Instead, one sentence filled every screen.

BIO-IDENTITY VERIFICATION COMPLETE

A second line appeared beneath it.

WARNING: TWO SUBJECTS MATCH EMILY CARTER'S DNA.

Emily stared at the message.

"So..."

"There are two of me?"

Sophia looked at the screen.

For the first time since they met...

she looked genuinely frightened.

"No..."

she whispered.

"That isn't possible..."

Then another line appeared.

ONLY ONE IS THE ORIGINAL.

The room fell deathly silent.

Every eye slowly turned...

May you like

toward Emily.
