CHAPTER 10 — THE LAST TRUTH

Silence consumed the underground chamber.

The glowing words on the monitor refused to disappear.

ONLY ONE IS THE ORIGINAL.

Richard looked at Emily.

Then at Sophia.

Then back to the screen.

"This is another trick," he said firmly.

"The Director wants us to doubt each other."

Sarah nodded.

"He's manipulated every piece of evidence we've found."

"But not everything can be fake."

Emily stepped toward the monitor.

"My DNA..."

She whispered.

"How could there be another match?"

Sophia slowly approached the glass display case.

"The Director never created perfect copies."

"He created perfect lies."

Richard frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Sophia looked at him.

"For twenty-seven years, you've believed this story was about inheritance."

"It never was."

She opened another hidden drawer beneath the display case.

Inside lay dozens of sealed medical files.

Every folder carried the same title.

Behavioral Replacement Program.

Sarah opened one.

Children.

Teenagers.

Adults.

Every subject had been trained to imitate someone else.

Their voices.

Their handwriting.

Their memories.

Even their habits.

Emily stared at the photographs.

Some looked almost identical to politicians.

Others resembled famous scientists.

One resembled Sarah.

Another resembled William Hayes.

Richard finally understood.

"The Director didn't need clones."

"He needed replacements."

Sophia nodded.

"People stop questioning what they already trust."

Sarah's eyes widened.

"The fake nurse..."

"...was never pretending to be me forever."

"She only needed a few minutes."

"Long enough to poison Emily."

Richard looked toward the ceiling.

"So where is the Director?"

A calm voice answered behind them.

"Closer than you think."

Everyone spun around.

William Hayes slowly walked into the chamber, leaning on his silver-handled cane.

He wasn't smiling anymore.

His expression was almost... tired.

"You've done remarkably well."

Richard raised his pistol.

"It's over, William."

William sighed.

"I wish it were."

Sarah stepped forward.

"Who is the Director?"

William looked at her.

"I've worked for him for thirty years."

"I've never seen his face."

The room froze.

Richard frowned.

"You're lying."

William slowly shook his head.

"No."

"Orders came through recordings."

"Encrypted messages."

"Anonymous meetings."

"I was useful..."

"...because I never asked questions."

Sophia stared at him.

"You expect us to believe that?"

William reached into his pocket and carefully placed a small black device on the floor.

A voice recorder.

"I knew this day would come."

He pressed Play.

Static filled the room.

Then...

A distorted voice spoke.

"If this recording is being played... then William Hayes has failed."

Richard's heart raced.

The voice continued.

"Project Lazarus is terminated."

"Destroy all remaining evidence."

"Every participant is expendable."

William looked at Richard.

"I was never the final piece."

"I was only another pawn."

Suddenly, the laboratory shook violently.

The self-destruct sequence had restarted.

Concrete dust drifted from the ceiling.

Emergency alarms echoed through the corridors.

Sarah grabbed the flash drive.

"We have the evidence."

"We don't need this place anymore."

Richard looked around one last time.

Twenty-seven years of lies.

Secrets.

Manipulation.

Everything had started here.

He took Eleanor's letter and placed it inside his coat.

"Let's go."

Sophia led everyone through a narrow maintenance passage hidden behind the archive shelves.

This time, the steel hatch opened.

Fresh air rushed inside.

One by one, they climbed into the rain-soaked gardens behind the mansion.

Seconds later—

A deafening explosion erupted beneath the estate.

The underground laboratory collapsed into itself.

Flames burst through the earth before rain quickly swallowed them.

Richard watched in silence.

Emily stood beside him, wrapped in a blanket.

For the first time since the funeral...

she smiled.

A small, exhausted smile.

"You found me, Dad."

Richard embraced her tightly.

"I'll never lose you again."

Nearby, Sarah looked toward Sophia.

"What will you do now?"

Sophia watched the burning mansion.

"I don't know who I am without the Director."

Sarah gently held out her hand.

"Then start by being my sister."

After a long pause...

Sophia accepted it.

Months later...

The evidence recovered from the flash drive exposed a vast criminal network operating through shell companies, corrupt officials, and private laboratories. Arrests spread across several states, while Carter Biotech was placed under independent investigation and restructured under new leadership.

The newspapers called it The Lazarus Scandal.

But one question remained unanswered.

Who had actually been giving the orders?

No one knew.

Epilogue

Six months later.

Richard visited Blackwood Cemetery alone.

Emily's empty grave had been filled with white roses.

He stood there for a long time before quietly placing Eleanor's letter beneath one of the flowers.

"I'm finally keeping my promise," he whispered.

As he walked away, a groundskeeper approached the grave carrying a fresh bouquet.

He noticed a small black envelope resting on the headstone.

There was no name.

Only a black raven embossed in wax.

The groundskeeper looked around.

No one was there.

Curious, he opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

It showed Richard...

Emily...

Sarah...

Sophia...

Taken only three days earlier.

Someone had been watching them.

On the back, five words were written in neat black ink.

Phase Two has already begun.

Far away, inside a dimly lit control room lined with dozens of surveillance screens, an unseen figure watched the Carter family in silence.

A gloved hand reached forward.

One screen went dark.

Another lit up.

A new file appeared.

PROJECT PHOENIX

Subject One: Emily Carter

The figure quietly closed the folder.
