Chapter 4 – The Boardroom Reckoning

Chapter 4 – The Boardroom Reckoning

The following morning, the executive boardroom at Vance Holdings felt colder than any courtroom.

No one spoke while the directors studied the overnight reports. Pages of financial projections lay scattered across the polished walnut table, each one marked with red revisions. What had looked like a triumphant expansion only twelve hours earlier now depended on explaining a series of questionable decisions.

Julian entered expecting to defend the company.

Instead, he found investigators, outside auditors, and independent board members already seated.

The chairman didn't invite him to sit.

"We've spent all night reviewing the restructuring proposal," he said evenly. "The numbers weren't the problem."

Julian swallowed.

"The judgment was."

One by one, emails appeared on the large presentation screen.

Private messages.

Expense reports.

Internal conversations.

None of them involved Maya's father.

Instead, they revealed Julian's own choices—mocking employees, ignoring compliance warnings, approving risky public-relations campaigns, and repeatedly using his engagement to Maya as a branding opportunity.

Every decision had been documented.

Every warning had been ignored.

Silence settled over the room.

The chairman folded his hands.

"You were given opportunities to correct this."

Julian stared at the table.

For the first time in years, there was no clever excuse.

No polished speech.

No audience willing to applaud.

Meanwhile, across town, Maya sat in her father's office overlooking the harbor.

Cargo ships drifted slowly across the water beneath the morning sun.

Her father placed a warm cup of tea beside her.

"You could have asked me to step in months ago."

She smiled sadly.

"I wanted to know whether he loved me... or the life he thought I couldn't offer."

May you like

Her father nodded quietly.

"I suppose now you have your answer."
