Three weeks later, reporters crowded outside Vance Holdings' headquarters as the company announced sweeping leadership changes, stronger governance measures, and an independent review of its corporate culture.
Julian stepped out of the building carrying a single cardboard box.
No cameras rushed toward him.
No executives followed.
The admiration he had enjoyed for years had vanished, replaced by uncomfortable silence.
Across the city, Maya attended the opening of a scholarship program honoring her late grandmother—a woman who had taught her that kindness was never weakness.
Instead of giving interviews about the wedding, Maya spoke about opportunity.
"Respect," she told the audience, "is worth more than appearances. The people who truly see your value won't ask you to become someone else."
Her father watched from the back of the room, saying nothing.
