CHAPTER TWO: THE RECKONING ARRIVES

The heavy, reinforced glass doors of the hotel entrance exploded inward. A massive, luxury black SUV crashed straight into the lobby, the tires screeching agonizingly against the marble. Shards of safety glass rained down like a crystalline storm. The engine roared before abruptly shutting off, leaving a terrifying silence in its wake.

The crowd screamed, scattering in absolute chaos. Eleanor stumbled backward, dropping her diamond-encrusted purse, her face draining of all color.

The heavy doors of the SUV swung open. A tall, extraordinarily muscular Caucasian man stepped out. He was dressed in a tailored black suit, a discreet earpiece resting in his ear. His presence was overwhelming, radiating a quiet, dangerous authority. The crowd parted instantly, terrified by the sheer predatory grace of his movements.

The bodyguard ignored the shattered glass, the screaming guests, and the trembling Eleanor. He walked straight toward Maya. The massive man dropped to one knee beside the overturned wheelchair, bowing his head with a level of deep, unwavering respect that sent a chill through the room.

“Miss, please forgive our late arrival,” the bodyguard said, his deep, commanding voice carrying effortlessly through the ruined lobby.

The crowd erupted into wild murmurs. “Oh my God!” “What is happening?!”

Eleanor’s arrogant face shattered into unimaginable dread. The illusion of her power evaporated in an instant. Her lips trembled as she stared at the bodyguard, and then at the little girl on the floor.

“H-how…?” Eleanor stammered, her voice barely a whisper.

Maya did not cry. Despite the fall, she possessed a quiet resilience. She reached out, her small hand resting on the bodyguard’s massive shoulder. “It is okay, Marcus. I am not hurt.”

Marcus stood, his eyes narrowing as he finally acknowledged Eleanor. The look he gave her was completely devoid of humanity; he looked at her the way one looks at a disease. He gently reached down, lifting Maya with effortless care, and placed her back into her upright wheelchair. He then retrieved her cloth doll, dusting it off before handing it back to her.

“The perimeter is secure,” Marcus spoke into his wrist microphone. “Bring the Chairman in.”
