CHAPTER FOUR: CRUMBLING EMPIRES

Eleanor was hyperventilating. She recognized Arthur Thorne immediately. Every person in the corporate hierarchy of the hotel group knew the Chairman’s face, even if they had never seen him in person. The realization of what she had just done—assaulting the sole heir to the Thorne empire—crashed down upon her with the weight of a collapsing skyscraper.

“Mr. Thorne…” Eleanor gasped, her voice shaking violently. “I… I didn’t know. She was sitting there, looking like a beggar… I thought she was intruding on my hotel—”

“Your hotel?” Arthur’s voice was deathly quiet. It wasn’t a shout; it was a blade.

Before Eleanor could dig her grave any deeper, the elevator doors pinged open. Richard Sterling, the regional director and Eleanor’s husband, rushed into the lobby. He had heard the crash and the commotion from his office on the mezzanine.

“What in the world is going on here?!” Richard yelled, pushing past the crowd. When he saw the crushed entrance, the security detail, and finally, Arthur Thorne standing before his weeping wife, the color completely drained from his face.

“Mr. Chairman,” Richard stammered, practically stumbling forward. “What… what happened? Who did this?”

Arthur didn’t look at Richard. He kept his piercing gaze fixed on Eleanor. “Richard. Is this woman your wife?”

“Yes, sir. That’s Eleanor. Eleanor, what happened?”

“Your wife,” Arthur began, his voice echoing in the dead silence of the lobby, “just violently assaulted my daughter. She pushed a disabled seven-year-old child out of her wheelchair onto a marble floor, calling her ‘trash’ and claiming that people like her ruin ‘her’ hotel.”

Richard’s knees buckled. He looked at his wife, who was now openly sobbing, her makeup running down her face in dark, ugly streaks. “Eleanor… tell me he’s lying. Tell me you didn’t do that.”

“I didn’t know who she was!” Eleanor shrieked, desperately grasping at her husband’s arm. “Richard, she looked like nobody! I was just trying to maintain the standard of the lobby!”

Arthur took a single step forward, and the sheer force of his presence made both of them flinch.

“That is exactly the problem,” Arthur said coldly. “You measure a person’s worth by the clothes on their back and the diamonds on their neck. You lack basic human decency. And in my family, and my company, humanity is the absolute minimum requirement.”
