CHAPTER 4 – The Twelve Million Dollar Trap

CHAPTER 4 – The Twelve Million Dollar Trap
The room fell into an uneasy silence.
Martin stared at the forged signatures for what felt like an eternity before slowly setting the papers down.
"These aren't ordinary bank accounts," he murmured.
"They're shell companies."
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"You don't know what you're talking about."
Martin ignored him. His eyes raced across the pages, matching incorporation dates, account numbers, and transfer records.
"Three companies... all registered under Elena's name."
Another page.
"Two more listed as inactive."
Another.
"And a trust..."
His voice stopped.
The balance sheet showed a figure that made even Celeste step closer.
Twelve million dollars.
She looked at Adrian.
"You told me those accounts were protected."
"I said they were."
Martin's head snapped toward them.
"You knew about these?"
Neither of them answered.
I folded my hands calmly.
"The money didn't belong there."
Adrian finally found his voice.
"You planted those records."
"No."
"You forged them."
"No."
His breathing became uneven.
"You're lying."
I met his eyes without blinking.
"You forged my signature."
"You opened companies in my name."
"And when regulators discovered the missing construction funds..."
I paused.
"...you planned to blame your new wife."
Celeste laughed far too quickly.
"Ridiculous."
"No jury would believe that."
"Maybe not."
I reached into the folder again.
"But investigators might."
This time I removed printed emails.
Dozens of them.
Martin read the first page.
His face lost its color.
"Adrian..."
The second page.
"Celeste..."
The third.
Every message discussed the same plan.
Transfer liability.
Delay the audit.
Keep Elena uninformed until after the honeymoon.
One sentence had been highlighted.
Once she signs the final authorization, she'll own every dollar.
No signature.
Only initials.
But everyone in the room knew whose initials they were.
Celeste crossed the room in three quick steps and snatched the papers from Martin.
"These are fake."
She barely finished the sentence before seeing her own words.
Her own email.
Her own instructions.
For the first time in years, the woman who controlled every room she entered looked genuinely frightened.
She slowly raised her eyes toward me.
"How did you get these?"
I smiled.
"I never stole them."
"I simply knew where to look."
Adrian slammed his fist against the wall.
"You've been spying on us."
"I've been paying attention."
His breathing grew heavier.
"You trapped us."
"No."
"You chose me because you believed I was weak."
"You built the trap yourselves."
"I only refused to stand inside it."
The silence that followed was broken by a familiar sound.
Ding.
The elevator.
Someone else had arrived.
Adrian's expression brightened.
"My security team."
But when the doors opened...
No bodyguards stepped out.
Three detectives walked into the penthouse.
Behind them came a woman in a charcoal-gray suit carrying a leather briefcase.
She stopped when our eyes met.
Then smiled.
"It's been a long time, Elena."
Adrian frowned.
"You know her?"
I answered quietly.
"College roommates tend to remember each other."
The woman opened her badge.
"Assistant District Attorney Maya Chen."
The color drained from Adrian's face.
Then another figure stepped out of the elevator.
A woman with tired eyes...
Holding an old notebook.
She looked directly at Adrian.
May you like
He whispered only one word.
"No..."
