CHAPTER 6 – Blood Is Thicker Than Loyalty

CHAPTER 6 – Blood Is Thicker Than Loyalty
For years, the Cole family had ruled boardrooms with absolute confidence.
Tonight, they couldn't even control the conversation inside their own bedroom.
The silence after Maya placed the federal warrant on the table lasted only a few seconds.
Then everything fell apart.
Celeste was the first to speak.
"This is Adrian's fault."
The words came so quickly they sounded rehearsed.
Every head turned toward her.
Adrian stared at his mother in disbelief.
"What did you just say?"
She didn't even look at him.
"I warned you not to involve her."
His face twisted with anger.
"You approved everything!"
"I approved investments."
"You created those shell companies!"
"You signed the documents."
"I signed because you told me to!"
Their voices rose over each other until neither could be understood.
The detectives exchanged quiet glances.
No interrogation was necessary.
Mother and son were dismantling their own defense.
Maya calmly opened a notebook.
"Please continue."
Celeste finally looked at her.
"I want a lawyer."
"You already have one."
She glanced toward Martin.
He didn't move.
Didn't speak.
Didn't even defend her.
Instead, he slowly removed his Cole Development lapel pin and placed it on the table.
"I'm withdrawing as counsel."
Celeste's eyes widened.
"You can't."
"I can."
"You've represented this family for twenty years!"
"And I won't represent fraud."
Adrian slammed both hands onto the marble counter.
"You're abandoning us?"
Martin looked directly at him.
"No."
"You abandoned yourselves the moment you believed nobody would ever challenge you."
The words landed harder than any accusation.
One detective escorted Martin toward the living room to begin an official statement.
As he passed me, he paused briefly.
"You knew."
I answered honestly.
"I suspected."
"Since when?"
"The day Adrian proposed."
His eyebrows lifted.
"That long?"
"When someone spends more time asking about your assets than your dreams..."
"...you learn to ask why."
Across the room, another detective approached the walk-in closet.
"Permission to search?"
Maya nodded.
"Proceed."
Adrian immediately stepped forward.
"There's nothing in there."
His reaction answered the question before anyone opened the door.
The detective disappeared inside.
For nearly a minute...
Nothing.
Then—
"I found something."
A steel panel hidden behind a row of tailored suits.
A biometric safe.
Celeste's composure cracked.
"You don't have authorization."
Maya held up another warrant.
"I do."
The technician began working on the lock.
Adrian's breathing became visibly faster.
Sweat gathered along his forehead.
The room was silent except for the faint electronic beeping.
Finally...
Click.
The safe opened.
No one spoke.
Inside were stacks of hard drives.
USB devices.
Paper files.
Bound journals.
Not cash.
Not jewelry.
Evidence.
The detective carefully removed the first folder.
Its cover contained only a woman's name.
Then another.
Another.
Another.
Twenty-three folders.
Twenty-three names.
Rebecca closed her eyes.
"I wasn't the first."
My stomach tightened.
Neither was I.
One detective opened a random file.
Inside...
Medical photographs.
Private messages.
Employment contracts.
Bank statements.
Everything needed to isolate and control someone.
Years of manipulation preserved like trophies.
Maya quietly exhaled.
"This isn't one victim."
She looked toward Adrian.
"It's a system."
Adrian finally broke.
"I never touched most of them!"
The words escaped before he realized what he had admitted.
The detective stopped writing.
"You said... most."
The room fell completely silent.
Adrian's eyes widened.
He understood.
Too late.
Every instinct told him to keep talking.
Instead, he lowered his head.
Across from him, Celeste slowly stepped away.
She looked at her son not with love...
...but calculation.
She was already deciding how to survive without him.
I watched her expression change.
Predators rarely stayed loyal when the hunt turned against them.
Outside, camera flashes began lighting the penthouse windows.
The media had arrived.
For the first time in decades...
May you like
The Cole family could no longer control the story.
And the night was only beginning.
