CHAPTER 7 – The Empire Begins to Burn

CHAPTER 7 – The Empire Begins to Burn

By sunrise, every major news outlet in the city had only one headline.

COLE DEVELOPMENT UNDER FEDERAL INVESTIGATION.

The helicopters hovering above the penthouse the night before were only the beginning.

By eight o'clock, satellite trucks lined the street below.

By nine, investors were selling.

By ten, the company's stock had fallen nearly thirty percent.

Inside Cole Development's headquarters, panic spread faster than any official statement could contain.

Emergency meetings replaced scheduled appointments. Executives whispered in hallways. Assistants hurried from office to office carrying stacks of documents no one wanted to sign anymore.

For the first time in decades, the Cole family wasn't controlling the narrative.

They were chasing it.

Adrian sat inside an interrogation room, staring at the television mounted high on the wall.

Every channel showed the same image.

His wedding photograph.

Beside it...

Footage of detectives carrying boxes of evidence out of the penthouse.

He clenched his fists.

"They're destroying everything."

"No," Maya replied from across the table.

"They're uncovering it."

He looked up sharply.

"You planned this from the beginning."

"I planned to protect myself."

"You tricked me into marrying you."

Maya smiled faintly.

"Mr. Cole..."

"You proposed to her."

His face darkened.

Across town, the Cole Development Board of Directors gathered for an emergency session.

The atmosphere was nothing like the lavish annual meetings Adrian loved.

No champagne.

No speeches.

No applause.

Only fear.

One director broke the silence.

"If these allegations are true..."

Another interrupted.

"They're already public."

A third pushed a newspaper across the table.

"Our lenders are demanding answers."

Then the conference room doors opened.

Martin Vale walked in carrying three archive boxes.

Every conversation stopped.

"I've resigned."

No one seemed surprised.

He placed the first box on the table.

"Board correspondence."

The second.

"Internal audits."

The third.

"Emails that were never meant to be seen."

One director frowned.

"What kind of emails?"

Martin answered quietly.

"The kind that end companies."

Hours later...

The board members sat in complete silence as page after page revealed years of deception.

Fake invoices.

Bribed inspectors.

Hidden offshore accounts.

Pension funds quietly redirected through shell corporations.

Construction materials replaced with cheaper alternatives while executives pocketed the difference.

Then came the emails.

Dozens.

Some from Adrian.

Most from Celeste.

One message froze the entire room.

If anyone asks questions, blame accounting. Employees are replaceable. Investors aren't.

No one spoke for nearly a minute.

Finally, the chairman removed his glasses.

"I've worked with the Cole family for thirty-one years."

He looked around the room.

"I no longer recognize this company."

Another director stood.

"I move to suspend Adrian Cole immediately."

A second voice followed.

"I second the motion."

The vote was unanimous.

Before noon...

Adrian Cole had lost the position he believed was already his.

Back at the courthouse, Elena waited quietly beside Rebecca.

Neither woman celebrated.

Rebecca watched construction workers gathering outside the building.

Some carried signs.

Others simply stood together.

One elderly man stepped forward to speak to reporters.

"My brother died on one of their sites."

His voice trembled.

"They told us it was an accident."

Another worker raised a folder.

"They stole our retirement fund."

Soon another came.

Then another.

Within an hour...

The story was no longer about one abusive husband.

It had become a story about an empire built on intimidation.

Elena looked toward Maya.

"This is bigger than I thought."

Maya nodded.

"They were never just controlling women."

"They believed they could control everyone."

Late that afternoon, Adrian was escorted through a courthouse hallway.

As cameras flashed, he suddenly saw Elena standing at the far end.

For a moment...

Everything around them disappeared.

"You ruined my life," he said quietly.

Elena met his gaze.

"No."

"You spent years building a house out of lies."

"I simply opened the front door."

Before Adrian could answer, federal agents approached Maya carrying another sealed evidence box.

She looked at the label.

Then her expression changed.

"What is it?" Elena asked.

Maya looked up slowly.

"We found a second archive."

Rebecca frowned.

"I thought we already searched everything."

"So did we."

Maya placed the box on the table.

"It wasn't hidden in the penthouse."

"It was hidden inside the company's executive offices."

She broke the seal.

Inside sat dozens of employee files...

And one thin black notebook.

Its cover read only four handwritten words.

Future Candidates – Confidential

Elena's heartbeat slowed.

Rebecca's face turned pale.

Maya carefully opened the first page.

Every woman Adrian had ever dated...

Every assistant he had ever promoted...

Every employee he had ever targeted...

Had been evaluated.

Scored.

Ranked.

And beside one name...

A recent photograph.

Taken only three weeks earlier.

None of them recognized her.

Which meant only one thing.

May you like

Someone else was already being chosen.

And she had no idea.
