CHAPTER 5 – The Woman Who Escaped

The notebook trembled slightly in her hands.

Not from fear.

From memory.

Rebecca Lane had once imagined walking down the same aisle I had.

Three years earlier, she had been engaged to Adrian Cole.

Three weeks before the wedding...

She disappeared.

The newspapers called it cold feet.

The Cole family called her unstable.

Adrian called her ungrateful.

No one ever heard her side.

Until now.

Rebecca stepped into the bedroom without taking her eyes off Adrian.

"You still have it."

She looked at the whip lying on the floor.

"I wondered if you'd kept it."

Adrian forced a laugh.

"I don't know this woman."

Rebecca ignored him.

Instead, she laid her notebook beside Adrian's.

The room became impossibly still.

The covers matched.

The handwriting matched.

Even the coffee stain in the corner appeared intentional.

Martin slowly opened Rebecca's notebook.

Rule One.

Never question your husband.

Rule Two.

Always surrender your passwords.

Rule Three.

Your income belongs to the family.

Page after page...

Almost identical.

Only one difference.

Rebecca's notebook contained fifty-two rules.

Martin closed it immediately.

"My God..."

Rebecca's voice remained steady.

"He added more every month."

Adrian pointed at her.

"She's lying."

Rebecca reached into her handbag.

"I hoped you'd say that."

She placed several photographs on the bed.

The first showed bruises around her wrist.

The second...

Finger marks on her shoulder.

The third...

A hospital admission form.

Date.

Time.

Doctor's signature.

Martin rubbed his forehead.

"This can't be..."

"It can," Rebecca replied quietly.

"I lived it."

Celeste stepped forward.

"She was emotionally unstable."

Rebecca looked at her.

"No."

"I was isolated."

"You took my phone."

"My bank account."

"My apartment."

"My confidence."

She smiled sadly.

"But you never took my memory."

Then she produced one final piece of evidence.

An old flash drive.

"I copied everything before I escaped."

Adrian lunged toward her.

"Give me that!"

He had barely taken two steps before one of the detectives blocked his path.

"Mr. Cole."

"Sit down."

"I haven't done anything."

The detective's expression never changed.

"That's exactly what we're here to determine."

Maya opened her briefcase and placed several official documents on the table.

Search warrants.

Asset preservation orders.

Digital evidence requests.

She looked at Adrian.

"You have the right to remain silent."

He laughed nervously.

"This is absurd."

"You don't have enough."

Maya slid one final document across the table.

"We do now."

Adrian glanced at the heading.

His face turned white.

Federal Financial Crimes Task Force.

Below it...

His name.

Celeste's name.

Cole Development.

Conspiracy.

Fraud.

Money laundering.

Rebecca slowly stepped beside me.

For the first time that night...

Neither of us said a word.

We didn't need to.

Across the room, mother and son looked at each other.

Not with trust.

Not with confidence.

But with the quiet terror of two people realizing the empire they had spent decades building was beginning to collapse.

And somewhere, far below the penthouse windows, the first news helicopters were already circling overhead.
