Emily stood in front of the television.
She didn’t blink.
The news anchor’s voice shook.
“Confirmed… covert operations involving unauthorized abandonment of U.S. personnel…”
Another screen showed Hawthorne’s signature.
Then another.
Then hundreds.
Emily slowly turned toward Daniel.
“You did this…”
Daniel nodded once.
“Yes.”
She stepped closer.
“…Why now?”
Daniel looked at the screen.
Because for the first time…
he didn’t look tired.
He looked finished.
“Because they stopped pretending.”
A pause.
“And so did I.”

Hawthorne’s office was surrounded.
Not by enemies.
By investigators.
By federal oversight.
By silence that had turned into accusation.
An aide spoke quietly.
“Sir… resignation is being requested.”
Hawthorne didn’t respond.
He was watching one final feed.
