Chapter 3 – The Lie Everyone Believed

Chapter 3 – The Lie Everyone Believed

Red and blue lights washed over the rain-soaked parking lot.

Three police cruisers screeched to a stop.

Officers rushed out with their hands already on their holsters.

"Police! Nobody move!"

Jason immediately seized the opportunity.

He rolled onto his side, clutching his stomach and screaming.

"He attacked us!"

"Arrest him!"

"He tried to kill us!"

Melissa burst into tears on cue.

"He just snapped!"

"We didn't do anything!"

The other teenagers quickly followed.

"He went crazy!"

"He assaulted Jason!"

"We were just talking!"

The officers looked around.

Jason's swollen face.

The cracked windshield.

The teenagers lying on the ground.

Then...

They looked at Daniel.

A middle-aged maintenance worker.

Shirt torn open.

Standing silently beside his frightened daughter.

To them...

The conclusion seemed obvious.

An officer stepped forward.

"Hands where I can see them."

Daniel slowly raised both hands.

Emily panicked.

"No!"

"They're lying!"

"They attacked me first!"

"They hit my dad!"

"They—"

A female officer gently pulled Emily back.

"It's okay, sweetheart."

"We'll figure everything out."

Daniel quietly shook his head.

"Emily."

She looked at him.

"Don't argue."

"Dad..."

"It's alright."

He offered her a faint smile.

The same tired smile she'd seen her entire life.

The officers approached carefully.

One handcuffed Daniel without resistance.

Another searched him.

No weapon.

No knife.

Nothing.

Only a faded wallet.

An old flip phone.

And an employee ID.

Jefferson High School.

Maintenance Department.

Officer Ryan looked at Daniel.

"You don't seem like the fighting type."

Daniel said nothing.

Jason struggled to his feet, pointing furiously.

"That psycho broke my wrist!"

"My dad's gonna sue the hell out of him!"

Officer Ryan sighed.

"We'll sort it out at the station."

As Daniel was led toward the cruiser, Emily suddenly broke free.

She ran to him.

"Dad!"

She hugged him tightly despite the handcuffs.

Her voice trembled.

"I'm sorry..."

Daniel gently rested his forehead against hers.

"You have nothing to apologize for."

"I should've protected you."

"No."

He smiled sadly.

"I should've been there sooner."

The cruiser door closed.

Emily watched as the police car disappeared into the rain.

Thirty minutes later.

Jefferson Police Department.

Daniel sat alone in an interrogation room.

Metal table.

Metal chair.

Gray walls.

Exactly the kind of room he hadn't entered in over fifteen years.

He looked around quietly.

Nothing had changed.

Except him.

The door opened.

Detective Mark Sullivan walked inside carrying a thick file.

Late forties.

Calm.

Experienced.

He placed the folder on the table.

"You know..."

"You don't look like someone who can send six teenagers to the hospital."

Daniel remained silent.

Mark opened the file.

"No criminal record."

"No complaints."

"No traffic tickets."

"Maintenance worker for thirteen years."

He frowned.

"Interesting."

Still...

No answer.

Mark leaned back.

"So why'd you do it?"

Silence.

"You almost killed that football captain."

Silence.

"You have anything to say?"

Daniel finally spoke.

"They touched my daughter."

Mark nodded.

"So you lost control."

"No."

Mark raised an eyebrow.

"I didn't."

That answer lingered in the room.

Mark studied Daniel's face.

There was no anger.

No panic.

No regret.

Just... certainty.

Almost military.

Mark noticed something else.

Daniel's posture.

Straight back.

Relaxed shoulders.

Eyes constantly scanning every corner of the room.

Even handcuffed...

He looked like someone evaluating exits.

Not a janitor.

Someone else.

The detective slowly flipped through another page.

Hospital report.

Jason Walker.

Broken wrist.

Three fractured ribs.

Severe concussion.

Two other boys with dislocated shoulders.

One with a cracked jaw.

Mark looked back up.

"You did all that..."

"...barehanded?"

Daniel didn't answer.

At that exact moment—

The interrogation room door burst open.

A young officer hurried inside.

"Detective."

"What?"

"We ran his fingerprints."

Mark frowned.

"And?"

The officer's face had gone pale.

"They're..."

"...not in the civilian database."

Mark blinked.

"What?"

"They're classified."

Silence.

Mark stood.

"What do you mean classified?"

"I mean..."

The officer swallowed hard.

"When the system searched his prints..."

"...our access was denied."

He handed over a printed screen.

Across the top were bold red letters.

FEDERAL RESTRICTED ACCESS

UNAUTHORIZED PERSONNEL

CONTACT WASHINGTON IMMEDIATELY

Mark stared at the page.

His pulse quickened.

He slowly looked back toward Daniel.

The maintenance worker hadn't moved.

Hadn't reacted.

As though he already knew.

Mark dismissed the officer.

"Leave us."

The room fell silent again.

Mark sat down.

This time...

His tone had changed.

"Mr. Carter..."

"Who are you?"

Daniel looked him in the eyes.

"I already told you."

"I'm a maintenance worker."

Mark almost laughed.

"No."

"You were."

He tapped the classified notice.

"But before that..."

"...who the hell were you?"

Daniel lowered his gaze.

For the first time...

Something flickered across his face.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Pain.

Deep...

Old pain.

He whispered only four words.

"A man who failed."

The detective frowned.

"Failed at what?"

Daniel didn't answer.

At that very moment...

Every phone inside the police station began ringing.

One after another.

Reception.

Dispatch.

Captain's office.

Records department.

Every line.

The officers exchanged confused looks.

A dispatcher answered the first call.

Her expression instantly changed.

She covered the receiver.

"Chief..."

"It's Washington."

Before anyone could react...

The station doors opened.

Four black SUVs stopped outside.

Men in black suits stepped out in perfect formation.

Each one wearing an earpiece.

Each one carrying a federal credential.

Without saying a word...

They walked straight toward the interrogation room.

May you like

And every officer in the station instinctively stepped aside.
