Chapter 9 – The Order to Erase Him

Chapter 9 – The Order to Erase Him
Washington, D.C.
Emergency Situation Room – 02:11 A.M.
A massive screen lit up the dark conference hall.
Live feeds.
Satellite data.
Police reports.
News broadcasts.
And one image repeated across every channel:
Daniel Carter.
Standing in the rain.
Beside his daughter.
The words beneath it were worse than the footage.
“GHOST ONE CONFIRMED ACTIVE.”
A senior official slammed a folder onto the table.
“This is spiraling out of control.”
Another voice cut in immediately.
“It already has.”
At the far end of the table, Director Hawthorne sat motionless.
No suit jacket now.
Just a white shirt rolled at the sleeves.
For the first time in years…
He looked tired.
Not powerful.
Tired.
A younger intelligence officer spoke up.
“Sir, the public is demanding answers.”
“They’re calling for his release.”
“And… there are protests forming outside federal buildings.”
Hawthorne didn’t respond.
The officer hesitated.
“Sir… what do we do about Carter?”
Silence.
Then Hawthorne finally spoke.
“Contain it.”
One word.
Cold.
Sharp.
Immediate.
The room shifted.
A woman in a military uniform frowned.
“Contain it how?”
Hawthorne turned toward the screen.
Daniel’s face filled it.
Calm.
Controlled.
Dangerously still.
“We erase the signal,” he said.
Someone frowned.
“Meaning?”
Hawthorne’s voice lowered.
“Shut down the story.”
“Discredit the video.”
“Control the narrative.”
“And if necessary…”
He paused.
“…remove the source.”
The room went silent.
Even the air felt heavier.
The military officer stood up.
“You’re talking about assassinating a decorated covert asset on U.S. soil?”
Hawthorne didn’t blink.
“I’m talking about protecting national stability.”
A bitter laugh came from someone at the table.
“From a maintenance worker?”
Hawthorne’s eyes sharpened.
“From Ghost One.”
That name changed the atmosphere instantly.
Because everyone in that room knew what it meant.
Not a man.
A classified outcome.
A mistake that had survived too long.
Jefferson City – Same Night
Emily sat awake in her room.
The TV was still on.
Muted.
News anchors were saying her name over and over.
“…daughter of former covert operative…”
“…incident now linked to classified military history…”
She couldn’t breathe properly.
Every time she closed her eyes…
She saw the scissors.
The laughter.
The scars.
Her father standing there like a stranger.
A soft knock came.
Daniel entered.
This time…
He wasn’t holding hot chocolate.
He wasn’t smiling.
Emily noticed immediately.
“What’s happening?”
Daniel didn’t sit.
“That video changed everything.”
Emily stood up.
“So I’m in trouble?”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at her carefully.
“You’re safe.”
That word should have been comforting.
But the tone wasn’t.
Emily stepped closer.
“Dad… tell me the truth.”
Daniel hesitated.
A long pause.
Then—
“They’re not just angry about what happened at school.”
Emily frowned.
“Then what?”
Daniel looked toward the window.
Rain reflected in the glass like broken light.
“They’re afraid of what I remember.”
Emily froze.
“…Remember?”
Daniel nodded once.
“Things I was never supposed to say out loud again.”
A chill passed through the room.
Emily’s voice dropped.
“Are you in danger?”
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“Yes.”
That one word changed everything.
Emily’s eyes widened.
“Because of me?”
“No.”
He stepped closer.
“Because I stopped pretending to be harmless.”
Silence.
Emily’s hands trembled.
“Then what do we do?”
Daniel looked at her.
And for the first time that night…
There was something almost soft in his eyes.
“You stay here.”
Emily shook her head immediately.
“No.”
“Dad—”
“Emily.”
His voice wasn’t loud.
But it stopped her instantly.
“You stay here.”
A pause.
Then quieter:
“I already lost too much once.”
That sentence hit deeper than anything else that day.
Emily lowered her head.
“…I don’t want to lose you too.”
Daniel didn’t respond.
He just gently placed a hand on her shoulder.
“I know.”
Outside the house.
A black SUV sat across the street.
Engine off.
Lights off.
Inside…
A man watched through binoculars.
He spoke into a radio.
“Target confirmed.”
A pause.
“Carter residence secured.”
Static crackled back.
“Authorization?”
A voice responded.
Cold.
Final.
“Proceed with containment protocol.”
The man lowered the binoculars.
And reached for the door handle.
Back in Washington
Hawthorne stood alone now.
Everyone else had left the room.
Only the screen remained.
Daniel Carter’s face stared back at him.
Hawthorne whispered quietly.
“I gave you an out.”
Behind him, a junior analyst spoke nervously.
“Sir… if we move against him… and the truth about Black Horizon leaks—”
“It won’t leak.”
Hawthorne interrupted.
“It will disappear.”
The analyst hesitated.
“…And Carter?”
Hawthorne looked at the screen one last time.
Then turned off the monitor.
“Make sure he does too.”
Jefferson City – Carter House
A faint sound came from outside.
A click.
Daniel heard it immediately.
His posture changed.
Subtle.
Instant.
Predatory calm returning.
He walked to the window.
Saw the shadow by the SUV.
He exhaled slowly.
“…So it starts.”
Emily stepped forward.
“What is it?”
Daniel didn’t take his eyes off the street.
“They sent someone.”
Emily’s voice cracked.
“To arrest you?”
Daniel shook his head slightly.
“No.”
A pause.
Then:
“To erase me.”
A long silence filled the room.
Then Daniel picked up something from the drawer.
Not a weapon.
An old watch.
He fastened it calmly.
Like a man preparing for work.
Emily whispered,
“What are you going to do?”
Daniel finally looked at her.
And this time…
There was no hesitation.
“I’m going to finish what they started fifteen years ago.”
Outside…
The SUV door opened.
A man stepped out into the rain.
Walking toward the house.
Slowly.
Confidently.
Not knowing he was already being watched.
And not knowing…
May you like
The man inside wasn’t the same person they had on file.
