Chapter 4 – Washington Has Arrived

Chapter 4 – Washington Has Arrived
The front doors of Jefferson Police Department swung open.
Four men in black suits entered without hesitation.
They didn't look around.
They didn't ask for directions.
They walked as if they already owned the building.
Their polished shoes echoed across the lobby.
Click.
Click.
Click.
Conversations stopped.
Phones fell silent.
Even the officers behind the front desk instinctively moved aside.
Leading the group was a silver-haired man in his early sixties.
Sharp blue eyes.
Perfectly tailored black suit.
No badge on display.
Only a small black leather credential case in his hand.
The desk sergeant stepped forward.
"Excuse me, gentlemen. This area is restricted—"
The older man opened the credential.
The sergeant's face immediately drained of color.
He straightened so quickly it was almost reflex.
"Y-Yes, sir..."
The man closed the wallet.
"Take me to Daniel Carter."
"No one enters the interrogation room until I do."
"Understood?"
"Yes, sir."
Inside the interrogation room...
Detective Mark Sullivan was still staring at Daniel.
Neither of them had spoken for nearly a minute.
Then...
Knock.
The door opened.
The silver-haired man entered alone.
He looked directly at Daniel.
For a brief second...
Neither man spoke.
Then something happened that left Mark speechless.
The older man stood perfectly straight.
Raised his right hand.
And saluted.
A full military salute.
"Sir."
Mark blinked.
Sir?
He looked back at Daniel.
The maintenance worker slowly stood.
"No need for that anymore, Robert."
The older man's jaw tightened.
"With respect..."
"There will always be a reason."
Mark frowned.
"You two know each other?"
The man ignored the question.
Instead, he placed a sealed envelope on the table.
Then another.
Then a thick black folder stamped in red.
TOP SECRET
He turned toward Mark.
"My name is Robert Hayes."
"I'm here under direct authority from Washington."
"I'll be taking Mr. Carter."
Mark folded his arms.
"This is an active assault investigation."
"I can't just hand him over."
Robert calmly slid another document across the table.
Mark picked it up.
His eyes widened.
Federal authorization.
Department of Justice.
National Security exemption.
Every signature was real.
Every seal authentic.
His throat suddenly felt dry.
"You've got to be kidding me..."
Robert's voice remained calm.
"No."
"I'm not."
Mark looked from the papers...
...to Daniel.
"...Who is he?"
Robert didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at Daniel.
Almost asking permission.
Daniel gave the slightest nod.
Only then did Robert speak.
"Fifteen years ago..."
"There was a man whose existence officially never happened."
"He led America's highest-risk covert rescue operations."
"No photographs."
"No public records."
"No medals."
"If a mission succeeded..."
"No one knew his name."
"If it failed..."
"The government denied he ever existed."
Mark stared in disbelief.
Robert continued.
"His codename was..."
Ghost One.
The room fell silent.
Mark looked back at Daniel.
"This guy?"
"The school janitor?"
Robert nodded once.
"The most decorated covert field commander this country has ever produced."
Mark laughed nervously.
"No..."
"That's impossible."
Robert slowly opened the black folder.
Inside were photographs.
Daniel standing beside helicopters in desert camouflage.
Daniel leading armed operators through snow-covered mountains.
Daniel shaking hands with men whose faces had been blacked out.
One photograph stopped Mark cold.
The President of the United States...
Placing a medal around Daniel's neck.
The President's face remained visible.
Daniel's face...
Had been intentionally blurred.
Mark whispered,
"My God..."
Robert quietly closed the folder.
"Those are only the files you're permitted to see."
"There are hundreds more."
Mark slowly looked at Daniel again.
"So why..."
"...why is someone like him fixing lockers at a high school?"
The room became quiet.
Robert's expression changed.
He looked at Daniel.
"You want me to tell him?"
Daniel remained silent.
Robert sighed.
"It happened fifteen years ago."
"Operation Black Horizon."
"Twelve operators."
"One extraction."
"One betrayal."
Mark listened without moving.
"The mission was successful."
"But Daniel's best friend..."
"Captain Michael Ross..."
"...never came home."
Daniel closed his eyes.
The memories returned.
Gunfire.
Smoke.
Explosions.
Michael bleeding beside him.
Daniel screaming for a rescue helicopter that never arrived.
The radio.
Static.
Then one final order.
"Leave him."
Robert continued.
"Daniel filed his report exactly as it happened."
"He requested a full investigation."
"He wanted the truth."
Mark asked quietly,
"And?"
Robert's face darkened.
"Washington buried it."
"They classified everything."
"The official report blamed..."
"...a logistics supervisor."
Mark frowned.
"But that wasn't true?"
Robert slowly shook his head.
"No."
"The mission failed because politicians ignored multiple intelligence warnings."
"They needed someone else to blame."
Daniel finally spoke.
"They asked me to sign the false report."
Mark looked at him.
"I refused."
Robert continued.
"So they offered him a choice."
"Keep fighting..."
"...or disappear."
Daniel looked down at his scarred hands.
"I chose to disappear."
Robert nodded.
"He resigned."
"Changed his name."
"Rejected every medal."
"Rejected every pension increase."
"Rejected every promotion."
"He vanished."
"For fifteen years..."
"He asked us never to contact him again."
Mark couldn't believe what he was hearing.
"You've been looking for him all this time?"
Robert gave a faint smile.
"We never stopped."
He turned toward Daniel.
"But today..."
"...you broke your promise."
Daniel didn't deny it.
Robert asked softly,
"Was she worth it?"
Daniel looked toward the rain-covered window.
He thought of Emily.
Of the blood on her face.
Of the fear in her eyes.
Then he answered without hesitation.
"She is my daughter."
"I'd do it again."
Robert smiled for the first time.
"I knew you'd say that."
Before anyone could speak again...
The interrogation room door burst open.
A nervous officer hurried inside.
"Detective!"
Mark turned.
"What now?"
The officer swallowed hard.
"You need to see this."
He held up a tablet.
On the screen...
Every local news station was broadcasting the same video.
The students' recording.
Jason cutting Daniel's shirt open.
The scars.
The fight.
It had already been uploaded.
Millions of people were watching.
And the number of views...
May you like
Was climbing by the second.
