Chapter 5 – The Video That Changed Everything

Chapter 5 – The Video That Changed Everything
Inside the Jefferson Police Department...
No one spoke.
Every pair of eyes was fixed on the tablet.
The video kept playing.
Jason's laughter.
Emily lying on the ground.
A slap.
Another slap.
A boot crushing her hand.
The girls laughing as they filmed.
Then...
Daniel appeared.
Silent.
Calm.
Holding nothing but an old toolbox.
The video captured every second.
Jason shoving him.
The slap.
The scissors.
The sound of fabric tearing.
Then...
The scars.
The person recording gasped.
"Holy... what the hell..."
The camera shook violently.
Seconds later came the fight.
No dramatic punches.
No wild screaming.
Just precise movements.
Each strike ended the fight instantly.
The video stopped.
Silence filled the room.
Detective Mark looked at Daniel.
"You never attacked first."
Daniel remained silent.
The officer holding the tablet swallowed.
"It gets worse..."
He refreshed the page.
The view count jumped again.
3.8 million.
Then...
4.6 million.
Comments flooded in faster than anyone could read.
"Those kids deserved it."
"He never even threw the first punch."
"Free that father."
"Who the hell is this guy?"
"Look at those scars..."
"He's military. Has to be."
"Protect your daughter at all costs."
Another officer entered in a hurry.
"Chief!"
"The news trucks are outside."
"And there are hundreds of people gathering across the street."
"What?"
"They're demanding we release him."
Across town...
Walker Industries Headquarters.
The top floor overlooked nearly the entire city.
Richard Walker slammed his fist onto the conference table.
BANG!
"What do you mean the video's public?"
A nervous assistant lowered her head.
"Sir..."
"It spread too fast."
"We couldn't stop it."
Richard's face turned crimson.
His phone had been ringing nonstop for the past twenty minutes.
Sponsors.
Business partners.
City officials.
Everyone asking the same question.
"Is that your son?"
He grabbed the remote.
The television showed the footage again.
Jason laughing.
Jason kicking Emily.
Jason handing the scissors back after tearing Daniel's shirt apart.
Richard's jaw clenched.
"You stupid little bastard..."
The office door opened.
Jason's mother rushed inside.
"Our son's in the hospital!"
Richard didn't even look at her.
"He deserves to be."
She froze.
"What?"
"I spent twenty years building this family's reputation."
"He destroyed it in five minutes."
His assistant hesitated.
"Sir..."
"There's another problem."
Richard looked over.
"What now?"
"The maintenance worker..."
"...someone in Washington is asking about him."
Richard frowned.
"So?"
"The calls aren't coming from normal agencies."
She handed him a printed report.
His expression changed instantly.
Department of Defense.
Federal Intelligence Bureau.
Homeland Security.
Three different federal offices had requested information on one man.
Daniel Carter.
Richard's confidence wavered for the first time.
"...Who the hell did Jason pick a fight with?"
Back at the police station...
Robert Hayes was already making calls.
"Yes."
"I've seen the footage."
"No."
"He followed protocol."
"Self-defense."
He paused.
"I don't care who Jason Walker's father is."
"He assaulted a federal asset."
Robert ended the call.
Mark stared at him.
"You called him a federal asset."
Robert looked toward Daniel.
"Because legally..."
"He still is."
Daniel sighed.
"I retired."
Robert shook his head.
"No."
"You disappeared."
"There's a difference."
Before Daniel could answer...
The station doors burst open.
A man in an expensive suit stormed inside surrounded by lawyers.
Richard Walker.
He ignored everyone.
"I want to see the man who assaulted my son!"
One of the officers stepped in front of him.
"Sir, you can't just—"
Richard shoved the officer aside.
"I own half this damn town!"
"I'll go wherever I want!"
He marched straight toward the interrogation room.
The door swung open.
Richard pointed directly at Daniel.
"You think beating up my son makes you a hero?"
"You've ruined your life."
"I'll sue you into the ground."
Daniel didn't even look at him.
The silence only made Richard angrier.
"I'm talking to you!"
Still...
Nothing.
Richard laughed coldly.
"I know people."
"Judges."
"Senators."
"State officials."
"You'll spend the rest of your miserable life in prison."
Robert slowly stood.
"Mr. Walker."
Richard finally noticed him.
"And who the hell are you?"
Robert calmly reached into his jacket.
He produced a black credential.
Richard glanced at it...
Then frowned.
"What is this supposed to—"
His words stopped.
The color drained from his face.
His eyes widened.
His hands began to tremble.
"No..."
He looked at Robert.
Then at Daniel.
Then back again.
His voice dropped to barely a whisper.
"...It can't be."
Robert's expression never changed.
"It is."
Richard took one slow step backward.
"You..."
"...you're with them?"
Robert answered quietly.
"No."
He turned toward Daniel.
"I work for him."
The room fell completely silent.
Even the officers looked stunned.
Richard stared at Daniel as though seeing him for the first time.
Not a janitor.
Not a maintenance worker.
Something else.
Something dangerous.
Daniel finally lifted his eyes.
For the first time since Richard had entered the room, their gazes met.
Richard felt an involuntary chill run down his spine.
Daniel spoke only one sentence.
"You should spend less time protecting your son..."
"...and more time asking him what he did to my daughter."
Richard opened his mouth.
No words came out.
For the first time in decades...
The richest man in Jefferson...
May you like
Had nothing to say.
