Chapter 3 – The Woman Nobody Believed

Chapter 3 – The Woman Nobody Believed
Serena shook her head with practiced sadness.
"Nathan... I didn't want to tell you this before our wedding."
She looked at Emma with fake sympathy.
"When you were unconscious, she was only part of the cleaning staff."
Emma whispered, "Please..."
"But she started acting strangely."
Nathan frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"She stayed outside your room even after her shift ended. Some nurses thought she had developed an unhealthy attachment."
Emma's breathing became uneven.
"Serena..."
"I stayed quiet because I felt sorry for her."
Nathan looked at Emma.
"Is that true?"
Emma wanted to explain.
She wanted to tell him about the endless nights she sat beside him because no one else came.
About reading newspapers aloud.
About celebrating every tiny movement of his fingers.
About praying he would wake up.
Instead...
No words came out.
Serena stepped closer to Nathan.
"Today she brings an old photograph to our wedding."
She lowered her voice.
"What do you think she wants?"
Nathan's expression hardened.
His voice became cold.
"If you're here for money..."
Emma immediately shook her head.
"I don't want anything."
"Then why are you here?"
She looked into his eyes.
Eyes she had watched remain closed for nearly five years.
"I only wanted you to know the truth."
Nathan exhaled sharply.
"The truth is..."
"...you're disrupting my wedding."
He turned toward the security guards outside the door.
"Please escort her out."
Two guards entered.
Emma didn't resist.
As they led her away, she stopped at the doorway.
She looked at Nathan one last time.
Tears rolled silently down her face.
"If one day your memories return..."
She forced a heartbreaking smile.
"...I hope you won't hate yourself."
The door closed.
Nathan stared at the old photograph still clutched in Serena's hand.
May you like
For reasons he couldn't explain...
His heart suddenly hurt.
