Chapter 5 – Cracks in the Perfect Story
The next morning, Nathan found the old photograph lying on his desk.
He picked it up again.
"Serena."
She looked up from her phone.
"When was this picture taken?"
She hesitated for the briefest second.
"During your first year in the hospital."
Nathan frowned.
"Really?"
"Of course."
"That's strange."
"What is?"
"I remember the ICU had a strict rule. No photographs allowed."
Serena forced a smile.
"They made an exception for me."
Nathan nodded slowly.
But something about her answer didn't feel right.
Days later, he visited the hospital for a routine checkup.
His former physician, Dr. Daniel Morgan, greeted him warmly.
"So... the wedding is finally happening."
Nathan smiled.
"Yes. Serena and I."
The doctor's expression changed.
"...Serena?"
"Is something wrong?"
Dr. Morgan looked as though he wanted to say something.
Instead, he sighed.
"I suppose memories can be unreliable."
Nathan's smile faded.
"What do you mean?"
May you like
"Nothing."
But as Nathan walked away, he couldn't shake the feeling that the doctor had almost revealed something he wasn't supposed to know.
