Chapter 7 – The Cameras Never Lied

Chapter 7 – The Cameras Never Lied
Nathan requested access to the hospital's archived security footage.
Hours of recordings flickered across the monitor.
11:48 p.m.
Emma quietly adjusted his blanket after finishing her cleaning.
2:17 a.m.
She sat beside his bed reading from a worn novel.
No doctors.
No visitors.
Only Emma.
Another recording.
Snow fell heavily outside the hospital windows.
Emma entered carrying a paper cup of hot soup.
She looked exhausted.
Dark circles surrounded her eyes.
Yet she smiled at Nathan's unconscious face.
"You made it through another day."
"So did I."
Nathan covered his mouth.
Another video appeared.
His birthday.
Emma placed a tiny cupcake beside the bed.
She lit a single candle.
"Happy birthday."
"I hope next year..."
"...you'll be awake to blow this out yourself."
Nathan's vision blurred.
He could no longer deny what he was seeing.
Then the archivist handed him an old visitor log.
Serena Lawson.
Three visits.
Emma Brooks.

One thousand six hundred and twenty-eight visits.
Nathan's knees nearly gave out.
